I believe that counseling can help you THRIVE. With compassion, warmth, and humor, I help people who want to change unproductive or unhealthy patterns in their behavior, and in their important relationships. I help individuals desiring to become stronger and healthier - often while experiencing crises or change in their personal or professional lives. My clients often struggle with issues that include anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, co-dependency, substance abuse, work related issues, life transitions. One of my passions is working with adults - partners, parents, ACOA's - who live with anxiety & frustration over a loved one's alcoholism/addiction.

We thrive from emotional connections and sometimes those connections become strained by misunderstandings or disconnected through loss and we are left feeling distraught. Learn to develop effective communication skills, embrace grief, identify ways to cope, build trusting relationships with your significant other and those you care about. After a painful relationship sometimes we become unsure of the next step. Want someone to understand painful past experiences, anxiety, depression or indecision and how this gets in the way of a life you want to live? Take a deep breath, take the next step and call. No need to wait any longer.

No matter how hard we try, sometimes we feel stuck dwelling on thoughts and feelings that we know hinder us from being able to move forward in our lives. I believe that therapy is a space for those that feel stuck to not only develop health coping skills, but also assess the impact that their life experiences might've had on their worldview and behaviors. I want to hold space for you to explore, unlearn and grow at a pace that is right for you.

My goal is to help patients learn to be responders and to be in charge of themselves. Throughout treatment, a functional medicine approach is employed. Care collaboration is valued. Patients with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges benefit from a variety of cognitive behavioral, neurobehavioral, and psychophysiological modalities. Patients with such conditions as emotional and physical trauma, chronic pain, addictions, brain injuries and disorders (autism, Asperger's, ADD/ADHD, motor and balance challenges, for example), sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression are treated. Individuals with neurological, autoimmune, metabolic, endocrinological, and other complex medical conditions find that the treatment modalities promote healing.

In a non-judgemental, respectful atmosphere I accompany people along their journey to living richer, more meaningful life. I encourage people to broaden their awareness into their thoughts, feelings, reactions and behaviors to identify strengths and whats working and challenges and how they are getting in the way. Recognizing the the mind-body-spirit connection, understanding healthy and antiquated defenses and increasing capacity for feeling a greater range of emotions at a deeper level is an important focus of the psychotherapy process. Identifying feelings, understanding reactions and learning better, more effective means of communicating with others is integral as well.

I am Chris Farley, though not the former Saturday Night Live comedian famous for saying you could end up "living in a van down by the river." I still think I'm funny, but I'm actually a therapist trained in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) with 20+ years of experience working with adults, teens & families. In recent years, I have begun focusing more on using gaming and nerd culture to connect with and help clients feel accepted, developing Dungeons & Dragons Social Skills/Therapy Groups for adults and teens. If you are interested in learning more about how gaming can be used in therapy, give me a call or shoot me an email.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
