My focus is on developing individually tailored ways to resolve, or manage, emotional and practical issues. I treat a variety of emotional issues, such as: anxiety, depression, despair. Frequently I treat couple or marital conflicts, incompatibility, infidality. Also, trauma, loss, indecision, ambivalent feelings. These may occur in relation to other people, or because of internal emotional struggles. I am particularly interested in patients developing relevant skills, such as conflict resolution, emotional regulation, assertiveness, boundary definition, sleep management, controlling one's thoughts, and other coping skills.

My goal is to help patients learn to be responders and to be in charge of themselves. Throughout treatment, a functional medicine approach is employed. Care collaboration is valued. Patients with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges benefit from a variety of cognitive behavioral, neurobehavioral, and psychophysiological modalities. Patients with such conditions as emotional and physical trauma, chronic pain, addictions, brain injuries and disorders (autism, Asperger's, ADD/ADHD, motor and balance challenges, for example), sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression are treated. Individuals with neurological, autoimmune, metabolic, endocrinological, and other complex medical conditions find that the treatment modalities promote healing.

Whether you're dealing with insomnia , hopelessness, shame, chronic pain, substance abuse, dissociation, self-destructive behavior, etc.
I believe that your personal and ancestral pasts inform your present, but you also have the power to functionally rewrite and close the chapters that are rooted in powerlessness, guilt, fear, and shame, while freeing up the space and energy to curate the meaningful and meaning-filled future you deserve. As a queer, Chinese, eldest daughter of immigrants, I believe that it is important to hold space for all parts of you, no matter how much hate those parts have internalized, and no matter have much love those parts have been denied. An integrative, systemic, and humanistic framework guides my approach to healing.

I find that those who feel disconnected, isolated and struggle with feelings of guilt, shame, and anger, are often those who are in the most need of support to reconnect with themselves and their world. This may be exacerbated by relationship problems, a history of trauma, and/or chronic stress. In a state of isolation and chronic stress, one may find that they have no more options; however, finding the key to hope can unlock one's potential to live their best life.

I enjoy challenges and diverse people and helping those who are in difficult situations. I specialize in responding to crises, trauma and workplace problems. So ideally I approach each situation, person or group with an open mind and a non-anxious-presence. I strive to provide that same level of confidence and trust to people in therapy. My strength is understanding complex systems (the big picture) and finding the little steps to improve things. If you have the courage to change; I’ll work to help you make your life easier using a program of change or the path that works best for you.

Has the pandemic changed your world? Feeling stuck? Experiencing a lack of motivation? Are you struggling with pain from a chronic health issue or pain from daily life frustration? Are you always anxious, angry or depressed? Feel distant from your true self? Therapy can help you to break through the pain to be where you want to be. Warm, supportive, non-judgmental therapeutic exploration can help you to reconnect with or discover the person outside the pain, who is not just a medical diagnosis, an adult child of an alcoholic, your profession, an angry/depressed/anxious person but the real you and your full potential.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
