Hello and Welcome! I feel that simply being present, actively listening, and earning trust is vital to utilizing therapeutic tools during the counseling process I see every person I work with as a unique, resilient individual whose life matters, as well as someone who I may get to know and grow with. As an eclectic counselor, I integrate elements from approaches such as person-centered, cognitive behavioral, psychoanalytic , as well as tuning in to various dialectic/mindfulness exercises. I enjoy working alongside (so-to-speak) adults, young adults, and adolescents in the clinical and community setting.

Couple and family therapy can sometimes serve as an efficient and effective strategy to improve the wellness of the whole family system. Sometimes severe psychological distress and suffering is located within the couple or family, rather than solely within a given person as it may appear at times. I have built up a strong skill set to offer a particular form of couple and family therapy known as " psychoanalytic couple/family therapy" which zeroes in on the undercurrent, unconscious meanings for destructive, relationship patterns that are outside the awareness of the couple/family.

Everyone experiences problems from time to time. We usually resolve life's daily challenges but sometimes they threaten to overwhelm us. Unresolved issues can affect us at home and interfere at work. Ignoring these situations usually makes them worse. Trying to resolve them on your own may only yield limited success. Professional help usually increases the chances for a positive outcome. At such times when you need support, I am available to help.

Are you having difficulty adjusting to the "new normal" of social distancing? While keeping us physically healthy, social distancing can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. The stress of the current pandemic may also be worsening pre-existing problems such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. Children may also be misbehaving more and experiencing anxiety, and families quarantining together may be fighting more. If you are struggling financially due to the pandemic, we can help. As a non-profit therapy center, we accept a variety of insurance plans and offer sliding scales fees.

The mere thought of therapy can be daunting, while in actuality most of us ask for advice from those around us everyday. What makes therapy different from asking a coworker, friend or relative for their advice, is my approach to therapy. I believe therapy is allowing you the space to work out issues, the space to feel free and learn about yourself in new ways. Therapy is looking at your thoughts and behavioral patterns for maximum effectiveness to your desired goals. My approach is best summed up in a quote by Benjamin Franklin, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.”

I have been fortunate to be able to work in a field I am passionate about, and having the opportunity to help people find positive growth in their lives. I've spent over 25 years working with adolescents in a variety of roles and settings. In recent years I have had the opportunity to turn my focus towards family therapy, and experience how rewarding it can be help families work through conflicts, making them stronger, more resilient, and unified. I also enjoy doing insight based work with adults who are experiencing conflicts or transitions in their lives, as well as working with couples to help strengthen their relationships.

I help people to live more engaged and fulfilling lives. I will help you to understand and change unhealthy patterns of behaving that you have developed because that is how you've always done things. I am particularly interested in the intergenerational transmission of trauma that can accompany those that immigrate from other countries and how our social and cultural milieu creates systems that create a feeling of Otherness.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
