In addition to individual therapy, I also do a lot of couples and
parenting
work, especially (but not exclusively) around special needs issues.
Making the decision to see a therapist is never easy and takes great courage. I try to provide a safe, trusting environment for adults who may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious and/or depressed. In my practice I use a supportive, solution-focused approach, which is practical and results oriented. I see therapy as a process for change rather than merely an exercise in insight.

The challenges of early childhood are sometimes overlooked. Common, age appropriate behaviors could be quite difficult to deal with. Moreover, when a child presents highly disruptive and even destructive behaviors, parents may experience helplessness, anxiety and even shame. Loving and caring parents may try to do all the right things and a child might still show signs of struggle. Managing difficult behaviors could become like a second job and increase levels of distress in the family. I utilize
Parent
-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) to help children and parents to enjoy their time together.

Many challenges in life can feel like they are uniquely yours to bear alone; however, this is rarely the case. People visit me concerned about how they feel and function in key life and professional relationships. I have worked with individuals, couples, and families on a variety of overlapping issues such as anxiety and depression, self-esteem,
parenting
children with special needs, setting limits with adult children, work/life balance issues, and sexual desire issues in committed relationships. Often these issues can be helped by addressing the common denominator of individual development within a family or relationship system.

I help with

and school issues.
I am an interactive therapist, interested in helping clients reduce symptoms of distress, usually anxiety or depression and explore with them the roots of their distress. I find whether it is addiction, eating disorders, chronic pain, or straight forward relationship issues, understanding the "why" as well as the "how" to fix it, helps the problem and symptoms subside. Clients that work with me finish therapy with a greater awareness of themselves which helps them avoid difficulties in the future as well as a host of healthy coping strategies to help get through the rough times ahead.

(I am not currently accepting new clients into my practice.) I'm very comfortable working with adolescents and have been able to provide them with a safe, supportive and non-judgmental setting in which to explore their conflicts around family, school, and relationships as well as to consider their hopes and anxieties about the future. Typically, my clients enter therapy to work on mood and relationship issues, school/work performance problems (including motivation), and anger issues. I also have a great deal of experience working with adults in individual, family, and couples' therapy, and I offer
parenting
guidance.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
