I work with clients from a person centered approach to their issues, collaborating with them using a variety of techniques including cognitive behavioral concepts, positive psychology and mindfulness to get at the source of their problems and to develop their unique path to reach their self determined full potential.
Has the pandemic changed your world? Feeling stuck? Experiencing a lack of motivation? Are you struggling with pain from a chronic health issue or pain from daily life frustration? Are you always anxious, angry or depressed? Feel distant from your true self? Therapy can help you to break through the pain to be where you want to be. Warm, supportive, non-judgmental therapeutic exploration can help you to reconnect with or discover the person outside the pain, who is not just a medical diagnosis, an adult child of an alcoholic, your profession, an angry/depressed/anxious person but the real you and your full potential.

In addition to talk therapy, I also practice Bibliotherapy, a range of different types of Art Therapy, Mindfulness , Guided Meditation, and Sensorium work.
The mere thought of therapy can be daunting, while in actuality most of us ask for advice from those around us everyday. What makes therapy different from asking a coworker, friend or relative for their advice, is my approach to therapy. I believe therapy is allowing you the space to work out issues, the space to feel free and learn about yourself in new ways. Therapy is looking at your thoughts and behavioral patterns for maximum effectiveness to your desired goals. My approach is best summed up in a quote by Benjamin Franklin, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.”

I commonly use techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness , solution-focused, and other techniques when applicable.
Hi! I’m Samantha (or Sam), and I’m so happy you’re here! I use she/her pronouns and I would love to know yours. I approach therapy in a collaborative style; I may be the licensed one in the room, but you know you the best. My approach to therapy is rooted in a person-centered approach. This means that I would act more as a guide during sessions. I always liked the analogy that you’re the driver and I’m like the GPS providing some direction. Sometimes a more directive approach is necessary, and that's okay too. Each client deserves to be heard and understood, especially in a vulnerable place like therapy.

I use a combination of techniques catered to each client’s specific needs, which sometimes includes play therapy, mindfulness , CBT, psychoeducation and somatic therapy (understanding the relationship between mind and body).
Asking for help can sometimes feel overwhelming. As a client-centered and strengths-based clinician, it is my goal to make that process feel comfortable and safe. I believe that the client is the expert and I am a resource to help guide and process challenging life experiences and uncover new skills to manage those stressors. I especially enjoy working with children, adolescents, and young adults to overcome anxiety while promoting positive self-esteem.

I incorporate 13 years of my clinical experience along with extensive training in Anxiety, Depression, Mindfulness and Integrative mental health methods to help my clients explore and develop healthy coping skills to manage their emotional challenges.
Every stage of life brings new challenges which can seem as overwhelming and disabling. No matter what path we plan to walk on, there is no clear destination in sight. Has this been your experience too? Therapy seems daunting at first but taking a step back and untying those knots in our thought process prepares us for a wholesome life experience. We all go through trying times but also possess the ability to sail through with equanimity. My goal is to provide my clients with a safe environment where they are encouraged, valued, challenged and understood such that it allows them to self-reflect and develop resilience for the future.

I work collaboratively with my clients utilizing evidence-based practices including CBT, Gottman, Mindfulness , DBT Skills, and EMDR (for the treatment of trauma).
We all experience ups and downs in our life. At times, though, our challenges become overwhelming and difficult to manage alone. Unresolved trauma may be affecting your overall mental and physical wellness. Or, you may be struggling with relationship and marital challenges; facing difficult life transitions; or dealing with symptoms related to anxiety or depression. It is important to know, however, that you are resilient and you have ability to heal, improve self-awareness, and make healthier and positive changes in your life.

I am experienced in modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Therapy (MBCT) and Psychodynamic.
If you struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, or interpersonal issues, I can help. For many years I have been working with adolescents, adults, seniors, and families. I listen carefully and compassionately to your special needs, and consider them in the context of your experience and present situation—a holistic approach that recognizes both your needs and their roots. Often these roots are cultural, a fact I know because my own life spans several cultures. I am committed to empowering those affected by trauma and other adverse life experiences.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
