I am a strong proponent of health-oriented and positive psychology that emphasizes what is right with people rather than what is wrong with them. My counseling work is based on the integrative approach to psychotherapy that is best characterized as going beyond and across the confines of any single orientation. I draw from different theories to form a comprehensive view of all the complexities of human conditions and emotions. The reason for this is because no one theory has all the answers that could effectively work with every individual and situation.

The adolescents I work with struggle with loss related to life transitions: parental divorce or breaking ups are painful and clients need to learn how to express their emotions in a healthy way.
"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." (Viktor Frankl) Many of those I work with are dealing with issues of grief and loss . Others suffer from addictions and desire to embark on a recovery path, or love someone with addictions and need to learn how to take care of themselves. Many are journeying through resolving trauma, anxiety, stress or depression issues. Regardless of your pain, I am invested in your growth, emotional freedom and creating your wellness plan.

As humans, we experience pain, loss , or difficulties in our lives as individuals and in our family relationships. We make our best efforts to cope, adapt or resolve these trying experiences on our own. But sometimes, we get stuck or they are too great to endure alone. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a safe place, free of judgement, invested in exploring, healing, and growing. Together, we can work on the interpersonal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual issues that hinder you and your relationships from reaching full potential.

Life events such as getting married or divorced; becoming a new parent or an empty nester; starting a new career or retiring all signal a process of change and transition. For some people, such change can create a sense of excitement and anticipation while for others great anxiety, fear and stress. The loss of a loved one is a change that often brings feelings of deep grief and depression. Furthermore, we are navigating massive changes occurring in our society and in the world that have impacted the way we live, work and socialize. The resulting stress and anxiety is at an all time high.

Aging gracefully is all the rage, right? So why doesn't your aging process feel graceful? Illness, chronic pain, financial woes, death of loved ones, and loss of independence are all real problems that many face as they grow older. As an older adult, you may be feeling lonely, isolated, worthless, and hopeless. You worry about your future. As the child of an older adult, you are looking in from the outside and worrying about Mom or Dad. They seem sad or anxious. Getting out to see a therapist is not so easy anymore.

As a Certified Grief Counseling Specialist, I can help you work through, and find meaning in your grief process.
Grief is a deep sorrow we experience after we are faced with losses in our lives. These losses can be because of someone we knew and loved, or a life transition. These losses can be expected, such as a loved one dying from an illness, or sudden, such as someone dying by suicide. Regardless of the reasons for the grief , everybody grieves differently. It is important to also remember that loss and grief are not only the result of a death . Many people grieve due life changes such as the loss of a job, a marriage etc..

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
