Clients from various cultures and ethnic groups and gay and bisexual clients have increased my own awareness to the fact that many life challenges may be universally experienced; however, an individual's experience of them is unique and draws from a rich and complex narrative.
I enjoy working with adolescents and adults around a variety of issues, including life transitions, anxiety, depression and trauma. My goal is to help individuals chart their own course by increasing awareness of how past experiences continue to resonate; to draw on their resilience, strengths and skills; and, to modify unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior that cause distress so as to bring about lasting change. My approach involves joining with clients with curiosity, gentle humor, and warmth. Treatment approaches follow theory, best practices, and is practical. Clients typically report improvement after a few sessions.

Using a warm and encouraging space, I help clients feel supported, inspired, and empowered to make meaningful and lasting change. I often say that attending therapy is like cleaning out your emotional closet. At first, it may feel intimidating to sort through the things that have been building up for months, years, even decades. Maybe the piles seem a little overwhelming. Maybe you feel stuck. I'm here to help you take all of the clothes out, sort through them, and find a place for what is important and fulfilling. I'll help you learn the skills you can use to maintain your emotional closet - even after our goals together are met.

The way we experience our lives around us, is vastly shaped by our past learned experiences, especially as children and teenagers. Ideally, a child should learn how to navigate the world with confidence, feels secure and safe, skillfully assured of his/her own ability to problem solve. When someone suffers from anxiety, depression or personality disorders, he/she have been forced to develop different set of skills, mostly on his/her own, designed to defend the body against either perceived or real traumatic events. As a result, their views of themselves and, the world and others, becomes rigid, distorted and generalized.

Hello! I’m Laura : ) Looking for a compassionate, kind, and playful mental health therapist? It could be me! As a clinician, I value connection, compassion, authenticity, and humor (because sometimes we just need to laugh). When I work with people, I view them through a holistic lens and facilitate a connection between the mind, body, and spirit. I supplement my work with trauma-informed mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), client centered therapy, and IFS. Overall, I strive to help people be unapologetically themselves and to build compassion for the world around them.

Hello! Congratulations on taking this step in your mental wellness journey. When navigating through transitions, relationships, intersectionality, and other challenging aspects of life, you may find that you encounter new or unfamiliar emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. These moments in which you are faced with change require intention and care. Therapy allows you to enter a safe, warm, and compassionate space to address the experiences that have brought you to where you are today with the hope that in time, you can begin to gain awareness and fulfillment, develop your identity, and deepen your understanding of what makes you, you.

Understanding who you are or what you are feeling is difficult when you are not even sure what words to use to describe your experience or what questions to ask yourself. Naming that is a big step. You may put on a mask to navigate the world in order to reduce the pressures you feel from society. High expectations when you were younger may make mistakes seem unacceptable. The journey to explore who you are may seem lonely. You may notice similarities in the relationships you form now with the relationship you have with your family. The early traumas in your life may be triggering you now in ways that are frustrating and upsetting.

How can I find a therapist in Rockville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
