We thrive from emotional connections and sometimes those connections become strained by misunderstandings or disconnected through loss and we are left feeling distraught. Learn to develop effective communication skills, embrace grief, identify ways to cope, build trusting relationships with your significant other and those you care about. After a painful relationship sometimes we become unsure of the next step. Want someone to understand painful past experiences, anxiety, depression or indecision and how this gets in the way of a life you want to live? Take a deep breath, take the next step and call. No need to wait any longer.

Anyone can find themselves experiencing psychological issues that can seem overwhelming. Stress can be triggered by most anything such as illness, death, divorce or separation to name a few. Emotions like crying, withdrawal, anger, unhappiness, substance abuse even thoughts of suicide may manifest. Ignoring these signs can make situations deepen. Trying to resolve problems on your own are often futile. Unresolved issues can affect our work, home and social life. Oftentimes family, co -workers, spouses even friends may not recognize signs that outreach intervention may be an option.

I believe that everyone can benefit from finding someone to talk to about life's challenges. I also recognize how hard this can be. As a therapist, my first priority upon meeting with clients is to make them feel comfortable. I offer a non judgmental space and work collaboratively with clients to develop solutions to their problems. I work hard at simply connecting with my clients in a very real and authentic way. I spend time understanding their unique challenges and tailor my treatment approach to the individual. I work with individuals, couples, and families; young adults and adults.

Cari seeks to understand an individual as a whole and their experiences, environment, and sense of identity in order to meet them where they are. A former Spanish teacher, Cari discovered her favorite part of working in the classroom was the relationships she built with her students and supporting them through their hardships. During her undergraduate program, Cari worked with a local youth center to empower young people by educating them about the powers of their brain and thought patterns. This work has inspired her to empower others to face challenges, embrace trial and error, and to grow in any direction they choose.

However you come into my office, whether in crisis or stuck or angry and hurting, my commitment is to see and relate to you through the eyes of your potential. The very nature of relationships sets us up for conflict and disillusionment. We change as human beings, and so must our most intimate partnerships. Marriage counseling allows us to discover your strengths and successes and at the same time practice saying the things that are scary and uncomfortable. This is how we rekindle authenticity and trust and hope. You’ll find me to be both supportive and directive. I’m an active therapist who gets in it with you.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
