Do you ever feel alone, unsupported, judged or misunderstood in your mental health journey? Navigating a mental health problem can be isolating, frustrating, and overwhelming, especially if you feel like no one understands and you feel stuck in the same spot repeatedly. We all need someone to lean on during tough times, no matter how much we know. A lot of times we just want the suffering and struggle to stop. To wake up and for things to be different. To stop the wrestling with your thoughts and emotions. Although I can't promise a magical solution, I can commit to creating a non-judgmental, respectful, and open space for you.

It sounds like you're describing feelings that can be incredibly tough to deal with. Experiencing sadness, low energy, negative thoughts, and isolation can be overwhelming. When physical symptoms like shaking, increased heart rate, or tightness in the chest appear, they can amplify feelings of embarrassment and shame, making it even harder to cope. I want you to know that you're not alone in feeling this way, and it's okay to seek help. Together, we can explore the underlying causes of these emotions and work towards finding ways to regain your interest in the activities you once enjoyed.

Some days it feels like you’re barely keeping your head above water. The anxiety won’t quiet down. The heaviness of depression makes everything harder. Too many thoughts. Too many feelings. You might be tired of putting everyone else first, tired of pretending you’re okay, or tired of feeling like you’re not enough, despite your long history of "pushing through." You don’t have to figure it out alone. Together, we’ll slow things down, make sense of what’s happening (including how past experiences might be showing up in your nervous system), and take steps toward a life that feels lighter, more manageable, and happier.

The world continues to be a scary place these days. People are losing their jobs or worried about their jobs. Grocery prices are skyrocketing. Every day there is a mass shooting. Family estrangement is a top challenge at present. As we navigate these challenges, loved ones die leaving us bereft. Post traumatic stress disorder can interfere with one’s daily life. My favorite quote is that therapy is not meant to focus on the pain but to reconnect with the joys we felt once upon a time! When you are ready to make a change in your life let’s connect.

Over the last 25 years, I have worked with children, adolescents & adults in a variety of settings. I recognize that in order to effectively work with anyone of any age you have to engage the client where they are at. I realize that it is important to understand culture, upbringing, parenting styles, essentially the world that the client lives in, in order to truly be empathetic to a person's issues and life challenges.

Experiencing abuse from a partner can leave you feeling isolated, confused, and trapped. Feeling like you don’t have the support of friends or family is one of the loneliest feelings on Earth. The only person you have in your corner is the same person that is causing you pain. You may even think for some reason you deserve to be mistreated; I can assure you that you do not. You are not alone and many others experience exactly what you are going through.

You may be the person everyone relies on, yet privately feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally exhausted. I support adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma recovery, and major life transitions, helping them better understand patterns and build more stability and self-trust in their lives and relationships. I also work with couples who feel stuck in cycles of conflict or disconnection and want to improve communication, feel heard, and reconnect. I’m mindful of how culture, race, and identity shape our experiences, and many clients value having a space where those parts of themselves are understood.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
