My ideal client is survivor of childhood trauma is motivated to create a fulfilling, empowered life for themselves. This shows their commitment by showing up, being engaged during sessions, and doing the necessary homework between sessions. Do you find yourself overthinking, being hard on yourself, or feeling like something just isn't working? Maybe you feel stuck. You might even feel "broken" and like no one understands you. While coping techniques and self-help materials can offer temporary relief for emotional wounds, there may be something deeper at the core driving how you feel. Whether you are new to therapy, are finding a new therapist, or are continuing your healing journey after many years, I will meet you wherever you are to help you find a way forward. Together, we'll figure out what is taking place at your core that needs to heal.

A quiet space to talk about feelings and life experiences can help when we are overwhelmed or stuck. The desire for inner peace and hope during turmoil often brings people to therapy. Traumatic experiences coupled with current life stress often take our energy and hope away. These need to be gently addressed in order to feel more comfortable in life. I respect that each person does this in his or her own unique manner. I also work with individuals who find their "golden years" may include depression, isolation, illness, grief and loss.

We all suffer, but most suffering is not necessary. We develop habits to cope with suffering, but then find we are stuck repeating patterns that no longer serve us. Creating a safe, stable, and trusting environment, we can non-judgementally perceive where we are stuck and have the courage to let go of unhealthy thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We are then able to grow in new ways that allow for gentleness, peace, and joy.

Welcome! As a social worker with a wide array of experience spanning over 15 years, I believe that taking care of yourself brings out the best in people. Prioritizing mental health brings about stability and strengthens one's ability to not just meet their own needs but be present for others in your life. My more recent focus is in geriatrics but throughout my career I have worked with a variety of populations across the lifespan. I have a certified therapy dog, Coco a Havanese, who is an avid Ravens fan! Coco enjoys dropping in on sessions.

Do you find yourself struggling with overwhelm, people pleasing or knee-jerk reactions to situations that you later regret? Or engaging in negative/self-harming behaviors, such as binge eating or overspending? You may be struggling with trauma responses and I believe you have the capacity to find healing. I help clients establish internal safety and understand their current coping skills/behaviors. Where necessary we make changes and amplify the strengths you inherently already have. Recovering from trauma doesn’t mean we eliminate every frustration, however we work on the capacity to stay present and calm where appropriate.

Hoarding Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
