Therapy can be an intimidating process. How often have you pushed your mental health aside because life grew hectic; were told to “practice self-care” but aren’t sure what that entails; or been told to “just get over something” and you’re left feeling lost or overwhelmed? Being a human is challenging! We’re filled with complicated emotions that derive from our lived experiences, environment, family dynamics, personality, and genetics. My goal is to help you sort some of that out to relieve depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict.

We all suffer, but most suffering is not necessary. We develop habits to cope with suffering, but then find we are stuck repeating patterns that no longer serve us. Creating a safe, stable, and trusting environment, we can non-judgementally perceive where we are stuck and have the courage to let go of unhealthy thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We are then able to grow in new ways that allow for gentleness, peace, and joy.

With the stress of the modern world, our hustle and bustle culture, and the limited time we have for connection today- people come to therapy looking for a place to let it all out. It's easy to fall into cycles of negative self talk, worry, or old triggers from our childhood. One thing I know for sure is we can't heal all on our own, and finding an authentic connection who can support you is invaluable. I can offer warmth, compassion, perspective, and mindfulness with a healthy dose of humor. I am here to help you guide and explore your feelings and reassure you that you are indeed, not your negative thoughts.

When OCD, anxiety, and depression get in the way of living fully, I help clients reclaim their lives and get unstuck. Clients that work with me are reflective, curious, and intentional about personal growth. Sometimes, clients aren't sure how to name the challenges they're experiencing, and they just have a hunch that life doesn't have to be as hard as it is now. That's okay! You don't need a diagnosis or the perfect description of your symptoms to start counseling. I understand that disorders show up in diverse ways, and I take time to listen to my clients so that treatment can be responsive to their unique needs.

Through a non-judgement approach I work with individuals to identify issues presenting the greatest barriers to overall well-being and achievement of goals, assisting in developing real-world, practical strategies for addressing and overcoming these concerns. An initial appointment might involve an informal discussion, introducing the therapy process and identifying problem areas most in need of clinical attention.

Hoarding Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
