Confluence Mind and Performance
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Annapolis, MD 21401
Our team of licensed mental health professionals also carry advanced masters or doctorate degrees in sports-related fields such as exercise science or sports psychology or are mental performance consultants (CMPCs).
We all carry pressures that most people never see. High performers especially do. Whether you’re a parent watching your child struggle, or you yourself are wondering why the mental side feels harder than it needs to be, the questions are often the same: Is this normal pressure? Is this a mental skills gap? Or is this something that needs real clinical care? Confluence Mind and Performance was built around that question. We’re a specialized practice in Annapolis offering two distinct but complementary services under one roof: licensed mental health therapy as well as performance counseling for athletes and high performers.

Reaching out for therapy can feel daunting, especially when you’ve spent a lot of time managing and navigating everyday stressors on your own. I can understand the struggle to ask for help in environments where strength is often measured by how much you can handle. My goal is to create a space where you can take a breath, slow down, and reconnect with what truly supports you, not just what keeps you going. My approach is conversational, collaborative, and grounded in curiosity. You can expect a non-judgmental space centered on honesty, warmth, and partnership as we explore what’s working, what’s not, and what feels stuck.

Do you feel like you’re holding everything together on the outside, but inside you’re tired, overwhelmed, or quietly discouraged? Maybe work, relationships, or family dynamics have shifted in ways that no longer feel sustainable, and you’re not sure how to respond. You may find yourself being hard on yourself, pushing through, and carrying it alone — even though it’s not really working anymore. Therapy is a place to slow things down, sort out what’s yours versus what’s situational, and move forward with more clarity and self-assurance. Taking back the reins is a very empowering process and will be worth your time and energy.

Sports Performance Therapists
How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
