I see mainly couples in my practice, though I also conduct three adult therapy groups, two all-female groups and one all-male group. I sometimes see individual adults for relationship issues,
family
issues, parenting issues as well as depression/anxiety symptoms. I work with people from a differentiation perspective, emphasizing each person's willingness and potential for growth. This is a non-pathological, strength-based perspective. I deal with couples' intimacy issues openly and directly. I usually work with couples more intensively in 2-hour sessions every other week. Therapy begins immediately in the first session.

Let us be real, life is difficult and even though we can have great days we cannot ignore the stressors and worries that occur in the background of our lives…the kids, marital issues, work, bills,
family
issues, friendships…the list of stressors can go on. During these times we ignore how this stress impacts our day-to-day functioning and our overall wellbeing. Stress knocks us off-kilter and throws us into a reactionary state and once there, we may not show up the way we want; aligned with our authentic self and values. I collaborate with individuals who find themselves in this situation and want to change how they show up.

Doctoral studies on the models of marriage and
family therapy
confirmed and enhanced my perspectives on helping couples as well as individuals.
I believe that the relationships that people share are a gift to humanity. I aim to help clients enjoy that gift to the fullest. What I bring to each session is therapeutic knowledge and experience, while the ideal clients bring the will to change. The combination of these elements provides the best chance for healing and growth. Passionately, I have found fulfillment and success assisting survivors of sexual trauma, verbal and physical abuse, and emotional manipulation. I help individual clients; yet many of the couples that I work with include one or both partners who seek help recovering from these experiences.

Finding a therapist can be hard work, which we all know too well, so welcome! A therapist's job is to ensure you are understood, validated, and challenged. I value clients as a whole to ensure I address their concerns through paths that fit where they currently are. With experience working with intersecting identities, from race and ethnicity, religion and/or spiritual practices, LGBTQ+ issues, ranging ages,
family
dynamics, substance use (harm reduction lens), and early adulthood on college campuses, I have and will continue to gain insight for best practices. My first goal is to ensure you are comfortable in our working alliance!

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
