Life can be tedious and overwhelming, especially when we do it with kids, work, and family. Even if we look around and see that “nothing is actually wrong in our lives”, we may still feel sad, lonely, anxious, and overwhelmed. Therapy can be very helpful in gaining the internal tools needed to cope better with our lives.

Often we wait until we have exhausted every measure before we seek professional help. You can start on your journey to healing, reconciliation, peace, and joy today. I believe that in times of adversity and struggle, we have the greatest potential for growth. It is often hard to see clearly how the difficulties we face will lead to positive changes, so instead we lose our way and get stuck in places of frustration, despair, and resentment. The change process is a journey-sometimes long and at times short. It is a process that gives us the opportunity to discover new ways of approaching our circumstances.

For more than 20 years, I have helped adults, adolescents, and their families to improve their lives through counseling. From my perspective, counseling is a process in which client and therapist work cooperatively on mutually agreed goals, towards client's betterment and emotional health.

My expertise is in working on issues such as improving relationships, coping with anxiety and/or depression, life transitions (particularly pregnancy and early parenthood), and healing from trauma.
Do you want to feel more connected to others? How about to yourself? Are things from your past getting in the way? Therapy allows for the time and space to focus on you. I believe all of us are capable of change, and therapy is one way to begin that change process. I work from an empowerment approach - in other words, I know that you are the expert about who you are, where you're from, and where you're going. My role is to provide feedback, guidance, and a safe environment to process that journey.

I have extensive experience helping adolescents, providing perinatal support, and am certified in family and couples therapy practice by the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
We all face stressors in life that can become overwhelming. Feeling stuck with our own negative thoughts or anxiety about new changes; repeatedly engaging in the same fights with our partner or spouse; worrying that we cannot support our children in the way we want - these are all universal experiences. Everyone faces obstacles, but not everyone has to remain feeling helpless, hopeless, or stagnant. It is at these times when it makes the most sense to reach out for support and when therapy can be most effective.

Pregnant, postpartum , or parent of littles? Navigating the challenges of parenthood is not always made easier by the joys. Maybe you’re here as a mom struggling with all of the adjustments postpartum , you’re a dad feeling more irritable than you’d like, you’re crying or worrying a lot, having difficulty bonding with your baby, missing your independence, finding it hard to make time for your own needs, experienced a loss or scary birth, or you don't feel like yourself as an expectant parent, a new parent, or an experienced parent. We tend to have many expectations about parenthood and need help adjusting when things don’t go to plan.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
