I have over 20 years of experience as a licensed clinical professional counselor, specializing in adolescent and family counseling.
With the trying times we now face daily, you may feel like many people have lost their way. The quiet place we used to gather our thoughts and plan for the future seems to be lite years in the past. It can be hard to listen to what our brains tell us when working, caring for others, or distracted, besides the daily struggle of just living. The “New norm” is a struggle that consumes us daily. We’re so used to multi-tasking that we don’t give time and space to sit down and reflect. Scheduling time for yourself is going to be a more critical component of your wellness.

If you or your teen are ready to make the first step, I am happy to answer any questions you may have during a free 15-minute consultation.
I help teens and young adults (ages 13-40) process their experiences and develop the tools they need to thrive. Many of the clients I work with struggle with anxious, repetitive, or intrusive thoughts that they describe as "debilitating" or "spiraling." This can happen when someone feels "stuck" in what seems like a familiar pattern of anxious thinking and behavior. They try to convince themselves that these patterns are "safe," but they actually make the spiraling worse. I am passionate about helping my clients use components of CBT to challenge these patterns, step outside their comfort zones, and finally get "unstuck".

My clients often live with big—and sometimes overwhelming—emotions. They’re deeply empathetic, but struggle to extend that same compassion toward themselves. Many are navigating suicidal ideation, self-harm, disordered eating, or other self-destructive coping strategies. Others are moving through major life transitions or difficult circumstances. In therapy, we focus on building a toolbox of coping skills and practicing what it means to be truly kind to yourself. Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all, but at its core, it’s about helping you feel better and live a life that feels meaningful.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
