You feel stuck in an exhausting push-and-pull with food, your body, or the pressure to perform. Your mind feels constantly busy—tracking, judging, or negotiating around eating, exercise, or appearance. What once felt intuitive now feels rigid or overwhelming, and rest or flexibility feels hard to allow. You're longing for relief: to feel more at ease in your body, to trust yourself again, and to live with greater balance and freedom. Whether you’re navigating an eating disorder, body image concerns, or the demands of sport, you don’t have to face it alone.

Life can be a challenging journey. How are you at navigating the bumps in the road? Do you have the skills you need? Are you feeling disappointed in yourself and often frustrated with others? Is it challenging for you to express your needs in ways that you feel heard? When you are upset or frustrated, have you pushed others away, sabotaging relationships? Is it difficult to set and achieve goals? Understandably, frustrations intensify when efforts are unsuccessful. If you have thought "life will get easier when ..." and you are still waiting at a long red light, let's talk.

My ideal client is someone who feels a pull to understand themselves more deeply. They may come in with surface-level struggles such as stress, relationship challenges, career uncertainty, or a sense of being stuck. At the same time, they’re curious about the deeper patterns that shape these struggles-recurring themes, limiting beliefs, or unresolved experiences that continue to influence their lives.

Life is way too short to feel like your best isn't good enough. Too short to fear you will not be accepted as you are and feel as though you have to live in your own shadow. You do not have to avoid certain people, places, or feelings to feel in control of your body. Could you be holding yourself back from being your best self? Kind of like self-sabotage? Do you have difficulty trusting others or building bonds out of fear they are just going to leave you? This could lead to experiencing difficulty maintaining any type of relationship.

Accepting new clients June 2026! Starting therapy can feel awkward or scary, especially if you’ve never done it before or you’re worried about being judged. I get that. My style is warm, conversational, and real. No jargon or pressure, just a space where you can talk honestly about what’s going on and not feel like you have to filter yourself. Many of my clients are people who tend to hold things in, help everyone else first, or feel like they should have it all together. If therapy has always seemed intimidating, my goal is to make it feel like a genuine conversation, not a cross-examination.

Hello, I’m Kassandra Barry, a licensed clinical social worker serving clients in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. As a trained EMDR therapist, I specialize in helping individuals heal from attachment wounds and relationship trauma, experiences that often shape how we see ourselves, connect with others, and navigate the world. How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
