Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists in Frederick, MD
Maybe you’ve spent so much of your life surviving that survival has become your normal. Our clients often come to us carrying trauma, anxiety, depression, DID/OSDD, dissociation, attachment, identity, self-love, belonging or simply the exhaustion of holding everything together. At My Sanctuary, we welcome clients who want a space where they can finally put some of that weight down and are searching for a safe space to exist and share their story. Together, we work to understand not just what you’re experiencing, but what happened along the way-and help you move toward a life that feels safer, more connected, and authentically yours.

I have been in private practice since 2005. I see patients with a wide range of concerns and struggles, and I specialize in treating eating disorders, trauma, and related issues in adults and teens. I understand that it can be difficult to seek help; therefore, I highly value establishing safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship, and allowing each patient a unique path to health and healing. I also work to collaborate with a treatment team, such as physicians and dietitians, when physical or medical issues need to be addressed.

I believe that working with the whole person - body, mind, spirit- is essential for finding stability and peace. Improving brain health is foundational to processing the past, learning and accessing coping skills. In our work together we will discuss the role of metabolic health and underlying conditions to mental health symptoms, and will rely on cognitive-behavioral, lifestyle and relational therapies to facilitate healing and recovery. The ideal client for my practice is someone wanting a natural, holistic and practical approach to mental health that is short term, goal-directed and complements your current therapy.

Congratulations on seeking help! You have taken your first step on what may be a long but rewarding journey of healing and self-discovery. It takes real courage to face what may be overwhelming fear, despair and self-blame. But you don't have to struggle with the burden of hopelessness alone. Others that suffered in similar ways have gotten help even when therapy has not worked in the past. Whether one struggles with stress, relationship difficulties or crippling self-doubt, therapy is used to identify barriers and cultivate tools that bring fresh perspective and resources to address the problem at hand. Tele-therapy available.

Nothing in your internal system is random. Even the parts of yourself that you hate have an important job to do.
I work with adults and teens who feel stuck in themselves, especially those with trauma, dissociation, or complex inner worlds. Many of my clients are LGBTQ+ or have learned to shape-shift or stay hyper-aware just to stay safe. You might feel like you’re too much, not enough, or constantly switching between the two. Together, we focus on understanding how your system works and building more stability, connection, and choice, while learning to tolerate uncertainty, without trying to force a change that won't stick.

As a kinky, non-binary, neurodivergent, and polyamorous human I understand the difficulty in finding a clinician who understands you and respects your lived experience. As a therapist, I create a therapeutic space that is intersectional, sacred, and honoring of the innate knowledge and ability to heal that we hold in our bodies. I operate from an anti-capitalist and anti-colonial framework and utilize neuroscience and attachment science to help clients understand the effects of oppression and trauma on our minds and bodies in order to heal and build a pleasurable life.

You've found yourself here because you're not feeling your best and want a change. Maybe you’re confused by emotions that come out of nowhere. You feel stuck in survival mode and everything in life feels urgent, all the time. Alternatively, you’re just going through the motions of life and not sure how to break free. Many of the people I've worked with have felt they had to ignore their own needs, stay constantly on alert, or out-do themselves for others. You may be left wondering, "Is this just who I am as a person, or is there more to life than getting everything done?" This is the little spark that’s gotten you here. Welcome!

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
