I have been providing individual, group, family, and
couples counseling
for over a decade.
The primary goal of counseling is to provide the most effective therapeutic experience available to you. The purpose is to help facilitate behavior change by improving the client's ability to establish and maintain relationships, enhancing the client's effectiveness and ability to cope, promoting the decision-making process, and facilitating client potential and development. Clinicians cannot fix other people's problems; our job is to provide a safe and supportive environment that allows the individual an opportunity to build the necessary skills needed to make better choices in their life.

I enjoy doing insight-oriented work and believe that the treatment
relationship
is an important part of successful therapy.
I have 30+ years of experience working with individuals in psychotherapy. I provide a safe and collaborative environment in which we can develop a
relationship
that promotes healing of the self. Therapy is art as well as science, and I combine compassion and intuition with a solid theoretical base to provide treatment that encourages personal development. I believe our early experiences influence the way that we process our later experiences, and therapy can change how we understand our lives so that our responses can become more adaptive and healthy to live happier, more fulfilling lives.

I work with adults, with an emphasis on recovery from emotional, physical and sexual abuse or neglect, recovery from abuse trauma and post-traumatic growth. Trauma survivors often develop creative coping strategies, including dissociation, in order to tolerate abuse and to develop internal resources. These coping strategies are critical to survival and are well-respected in our therapeutic
relationship
. I also work with circumstances where there is an imbalance of power and lack of recognition of the individual's right to respect and dignity. I strongly believe that every person has the right to be treated with respect in all aspects of life.

Often times, individuals and families struggle with issues beyond understanding or don't have an individual to provide an unbiased approach to life's problems. Sometimes those seeking therapy have a support system that doesn't know how to best assist in their issues. Some individuals don't have a support system and need help navigating isolation. Some
couples
want to feel heard, validated, and respected by their
partner
and struggle with communication. In all, therapy can provide a safe place for positive growth to occur as individuals, families, and
couples
work to achieve healthier approaches to a majority of life's problems.

I would be honored to
partner
with you so that you can cope with life’s inevitable difficulties with more strength, grace, compassion, and understanding of yourself. No one should feel alone, and sometimes we need a safe person outside of our own situation to help make sense of it all and find peace. I’ve been a mental health clinician in Frederick for 15+ years. My early career was spent leading the team of clinicians providing emergency psychiatric services for Frederick County, as well as providing psychiatric training to local first responders. My passion, however, lies with my private practice and working 1-on-1 with people.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
