Finding a therapist with whom one can form a trusting working relationship is essential to a successful therapeutic experience, no matter what the issue. I've been in private practice for over twenty years working with adults, adolescents and children in individual, couples and family therapy . I've also worked in community mental health and psychiatric hospitals, as well as medical and psychology training programs. I enjoy working with a broad range of issues. With adults these may include long-standing difficulties with anxiety, depression, loss, chronic emotional or medical illness, as well as relationship issues. Prior to becoming a psychologist I taught both elementary and high school. I've worked extensively with youngsters of all ages, as well as their parents, to address developmental, emotional and parenting challenges specific to these age groups. My work is grounded in a psychdynamic understanding of the individual. This informs my choice of the particular treatment approach I might suggest. I have training and experience in insight oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and emotionally-focused treatment. If you feel I might be helpful, please contact me.

As a couple and family therapist , I help individuals and couples work on either fine-tuning their communications skills or major problem-solving, so they can finally move beyond issues such as pointless arguing, infidelity, emotional disconnection and lack of intimacy.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by the pain of wondering whether to leave or stay in your relationship because you've tried everything but nothing really works, I'd like to help. At times, you may feel angry and disappointed that the attraction, admiration or compassion for each other has begun to fade. Or you may sometimes believe things are starting to improve only to feel the tension return once again. It can be a draining dance that leaves you confused, wounded and bitter.

Although I work with individuals, I also understand the impact of larger structural systems and dynamics ( family , cultural, racial, socioeconomic, political and the workplace) on our well-being.
I help adults who feel stuck in negative patterns due to current stress, difficult pasts and/or traumatic experiences. Clients say I have helped promote healing and growth through attentive listening, and through guidance in helping to increase awareness of emotions, thoughts, physical sensations and actions. With awareness of our long standing patterns of behaving, thinking and emotional expression, we can then learn new practices to create change. In working with me, I strive to help clients feel more empowered, intentional in life, and have more self-compassion.

Every stage in life, every situation we face, brings with it challenges, hardships and opportunities. The psychotherapeutic process brings focus and awareness to where we are now in our lives, where we've been, and the person we want to be. I see the therapeutic process as a journey that we take together. Whether you are an adult, adolescent, or family , my goal is to create a safe, caring, non-judgmental environment where you can explore relationship dynamics, patterns of behavior, identity, and opportunities for growth and change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
