Therapy often begins when you feel exhausted from fighting different battles every day, battles that feel too heavy to manage alone. I will work with you to navigate these challenges in a supportive and collaborative way. I believe therapy works best when you feel understood and are able to show up as yourself. My approach is warm, relational, and grounded in approaches like CBT, DBT, trauma-focused interventions, and IFS. I focus on making these tools feel practical, natural, and tailored to your life rather than overly clinical or scripted.

I will hold you accountable, but with empathy and compassion. Everyone experiences problems from time to time. We usually resolve life's daily challenges but sometimes they threaten to overwhelm us. Unresolved issues can affect us at home and interfere at work. Ignoring these situations usually makes them worse. Trying to resolve them on your own may only yield limited success. Professional help usually increases the chances for a positive outcome. At such times when you need support, I am available to help.

Benjamin Lang
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW-C
Baltimore, MD 21202
I specialize in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children and adolescents, including early years (pre-K), gifted students, people with autism, and disabilities. Child psychotherapy is a process that begins with establishing safety and trust in a new relationship. Meaning and patterns emerge over time and are understood within the relationship, through drawing, talking, and playing. Understanding leads to a decrease in “the behaviors”, as it gives meaning to the feelings and thoughts underlying the behaviors. This leads to improvements in relationships and an increase in the capacity to reflect and to think on one’s own.

Our work will focus on reclaiming your personal power, living as an expression of your values, and growing your capacity to create change in your life. Expect a process-oriented approach emphasizing your engagement and commitment; a holistic worldview that reflects the interdependency of ourselves in both the broader world and in the constituent parts of our lives which can invite distress when compartmentalized and fractured; and a gently challenging style that will hold you to your ideals, your utmost honesty, and your personal vision of a life well-lived.

Send me a message to schedule a consult or click on my website. Having worked in demanding environments, I understand the pressure that comes with high-performance careers. The constant pressure to become successful often leads to anxiety, burnout, and a desire for something more. I help clients navigate the tension between achievement and inner peace, striking a balance between what the world expects and what build lasting strength. Among the timbers, or beams, that support a healthy life are purpose, connection, rest, and faith.

Many people feel so alone with their problems. Central to my approach to counseling is my belief that the relationship between the client and the counselor is critical to effective counseling. Only when a client feels that they are fully heard, understood, accepted and valued without judgment, does change occur. These key factors are manifest through active listening, empathy, unconditional positive regard, and the development of a therapeutic alliance. That alliance is built around an agreement on the client’s goals. These goals must always be the client’s goals, no one else's. No problem is "too hard" and no revelation "too dark".

Have you been experiencing challenges with anxiety, depression, self-esteem/self-confidence, illness, major life challenges or something you can't quite determine? Could you use a caring ear (technically a pair of caring ears ;) and a little bit of assistance to get back-on-track? Would a little levity (when appropriate) bring a much-needed smile to your face? Are you willing to share, willing to listen, and willing to do the work deemed necessary to improve your well-being and achieve your goals? I think you are; and I look forward to beginning our work together!

I am dedicated to utilizing my extensive experience and education to assist in promoting growth and self-understanding in their mental health. My goal is to help manage day-to-day life challenges and navigate life transitions by working through current and underlying issues. These transitions, whether for older adults and couples facing significant life changes, young adults moving from college into the workforce, or adolescents transitioning from high school to college, can be daunting and anxiety-inducing. They often bring feelings of being stuck, fears of the unknown, and issues related to separation from family and friends.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
