I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion. I am an approved art therapy Supervisor in Maryland.

Do you feel pulled in a million directions, unable to fit it all in? Are you struggling to keep up with your relationships, work and health? Are you feeling overwhelmed or just plain stuck in life? I help people restructure their damaged relationships. Relationships are more than romantic interactions between two people. Relationships as I define it can be with anyone or anything that you exchange energy with. The biggest relationship that we struggle to understand and grow with is the person staring at us in the mirror each morning.

I work with adults, with an emphasis on recovery from emotional, physical and sexual abuse or neglect, recovery from abuse trauma and post-traumatic growth. Trauma survivors often develop creative coping strategies, including dissociation, in order to tolerate abuse and to develop internal resources. These coping strategies are critical to survival and are well-respected in our therapeutic relationship. I also work with circumstances where there is an imbalance of power and lack of recognition of the individual's right to respect and dignity. I strongly believe that every person has the right to be treated with respect in all aspects of life.

Often when I meet with a new client, they express that they understand what they're feeling but not how to change it. This is because most therapy revolves around a "top-down" approach where we put words to what's going on, but neglect the "bottom-up" approach of connecting directly with the nervous system to truly help ourselves feel safe and connected the way we want to! Many of my clients have intellectualized and separated themselves from what they feel, and I've helped many clients understand how trauma, relationships and sensory overload affects them through connecting with the best expert available: themselves.

So many of us that have experienced trauma often feel helpless, like there is no solution to feeling like our true selves again. Maybe you have suffered from early childhood trauma and feel that you are not sure who you are and how you fit into this world. Trauma affects our brain, but the way that we notice it is in our relationships and our ability to function day to day. I work with clients who have endured trauma of many kinds but find enjoyment in helping survivors of childhood sexual abuse heal and reduce the shame that often accompanies their experience.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
