Faulty habitual patterns can touch even the most successful and self-aware individuals. Outwardly, they may lead lives marked by achievement, discipline, and ambition. Internally, however, they may be fighting a daily battle with bad patterns, alcohol or other habits often in isolation, shame or quiet confusion. Our work is designed for those who are deeply aware of their inner world but find themselves caught in a cycle of habits that no longer aligns with their values, goals, or sense of self. They are not broken but often overwhelmed, burdened by past and present pain and seeking a path that honors their complexity and strength.

We thrive from emotional connections and sometimes those connections become strained by misunderstandings or disconnected through loss and we are left feeling distraught. Learn to develop effective communication skills, embrace grief, identify ways to cope, build trusting relationships with your significant other and those you care about. After a painful relationship sometimes we become unsure of the next step. Want someone to understand painful past experiences, anxiety, depression or indecision and how this gets in the way of a life you want to live? Take a deep breath, take the next step and call. No need to wait any longer.

I've worked with people who have experienced breast cancer, those who are processing the present-day consequences of invalidating childhood environments, individuals who’ve experienced intimate partner violence, people struggling with or recovering from alcohol use disorder, as well as those managing day-to-day anxieties and periods of depression.
I am a licensed social worker with fourteen years of clinical experience. While I draw upon various modalities, my approach is primarily insight-oriented psychodynamic psychotherapy, through a trauma-informed and strengths-based lens, and with emphases on attachment theory, mindfulness and polyvagal theory.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
