As a trauma -informed therapist, my goal is not to give you the information you already know but to help facilitate the process of becoming more aware of what's going on inside of you -both mind and body- and heal the root issues so you can reconnect with yourself as well as the people in your life.
One of the most challenging aspects of starting Therapy is finding "The Right Fit"- The therapist who you feel comfortable opening up to and who you trust can help you with your issues. My ideal client has been through therapy in the past but has not been able to get to the root of the matter. They "know" what to do -and have coping skills coming out of their ears- but can't seem to fully heal. And when all else fails, old habits and negative coping skills are there to fall back on.

I help people overcome anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma and more.
Honesty. Vulnerability. Courage. If you are reading this right now you may be looking to make some positive changes in your life. It takes someone that is truly honest with themselves to reach out when they need help. It takes vulnerability to talk about it. It takes courage to follow through. Sometimes we may feel stuck in life and we come to a bridge that we need to cross. Are you looking for a therapist that is real and genuine that can assist you in crossing this bridge?

It's a pleasure to work with children, adolescents, and young adults/adults to develop skills for everyday life. For more than 20 years I have specialized in working with children and adolescents who experience challenges in school, as well as their families. Concerned about mood or behavioral issues, distractibility/inattention, nervous feelings, grief and loss, trauma , and/or general developmental issues? I can help. In addition to traditional treatment modalities, I utilize creative modalities such as play, art, or music into treatment approaches to engage my clients.

With over 8 years of experience, working particularly with individuals suffering from significant anxiety, experienced trauma , as well as depression and distress around change, I have a very eclectic style of treatment.
Hi, I’m JD! I’m a mental health therapist located in Columbia, MD with a holistic approach to life and wellness. I support people with identifying the barriers to their life satisfaction and establishing the changes needed to achieve increased states of happiness. And yes I said states because happiness, as in any emotion, is a feeling that will come and go. Sometimes lengthening those experiences comes from identifying the blocks and removing them.

I have experience in working with various mental disorders including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder; as well as substance use/abuse.
“Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going” – Noam Shpancer, PHD. Sometimes in life we reach a point where we lose focus on the things critical to improving/maintaining our mental health and overall quality of life. I myself have once reached that point and it was then I realized the importance of having a strong network of support, including a therapist. I have come to learn that a tremendous amount of people feel alone, left out, or unheard; and so, I strive to create a safe space for people to be seen, heard, understood, and valued.

I am most passionate about working with individuals who have lived through traumatic events. This includes sexual trauma , attachment concerns, and racialized trauma . I am most passionate about working with individuals who seek support in managing depression and anxiety as they relate to negative life experiences. People of color have varied experiences that shape how we navigate the world and I make space for that in the therapeutic setting. Assisting with the navigation, coping, and processing of trauma is work that I find rewarding and the reason I am a therapist.

With over a decade of experience working with clients who have experienced family dysfunction, trauma , abuse, sudden loss, crime victimization, natural disasters, and legal challenges, I know that with motivation, commitment and a supportive and accepting therapeutic partnership, thriving, even after the most difficult life events is within reach.
Everyone deserves support through life's most difficult times. For some, it may have been an event that occurred years ago, and for others it is more recent. Seeking professional help and support is often times the first step to coping with a difficult life period and is a huge sign of courage and investment in oneself. I believe that healing and empowerment are wholly achievable and begin with a trusting and accepting therapist-client relationship in a supportive therapeutic environment.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
