I offer adolescents joint sessions with parents and other family members to promote effective ways of communicating.
I believe that people are naturally resilient. Therapy offers an opportunity to boost resilience by nurturing awareness and finding greater strength and fulfillment. Most of us have found ways to manage stress, but the things that worked in the past might not work today. We often feel stuck. I seek to provide a space for observation, reflection, and exploration so that new narratives and choice can emerge. Understanding linkages between early, implicit learning experiences, including attachment patterns, and present modes of thinking and behaving is key to sustainable growth and change. Together we'll address your personal goals.

Our lives are complicated and often stressful, necessitating juggling multiple roles, responsibilities and internal as well as external conflicts. Clients may be dealing with so many challenges, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating), relationship problems, career uncertainty, family conflicts. Whatever the issue, the important factor is the willingness to face it and bring energy to working on it. The work we do in psychotherapy is both nurturing and stretching and opens the door to the possibility of growth and change .

Sometimes in life, we struggle with our mental health. We can get off course striving to understand our thoughts and emotions. Trying to figure out how to live life on life’s terms can sometimes lead us into emotional uncertainties, which affect our occupation, finances, families, relationships, social connections, and substance use. At times in our lives, others can’t relate or understand us, so they label us or try to put us in a box which restricts our freedom to be ourselves. Are you in a season of your life when you find it difficult to connect with your family , friends, co-workers, or your social network? Want some help?

No matter what brings you or your family to therapy, working with a trans-affirming, trans-competent therapist who "gets it," who is knowledgeable in the challenges that transgender and non-binary individuals, couples, and families may face, and who is accepting and supportive of all people, makes the therapeutic relationship process easier.
Are you or someone you love questioning gender? Are you or someone you love needing support with your transition processes? Are you transgender or non-binary and have had challenges finding an affirming, trans-competent provider? I am a queer trans-man with years of experience working with children, teens, and adults who are transgender, gender diverse, or questioning their gender, and their family members. Whether you are seeking therapy related to your gender or not, and whatever challenges have brought you to therapy, I am here to listen and to help you reach your full potential.

Over my forty-five year career I have worked with many different people of every race, age, and problem type. I listen with a supportive, trained ear, and help my clients find the best coping strategies that will enable them to be happier. Even if only one person is in my office, I see that person as part of their family system, and help them make positive changes that will increase good feelings and reduce conflict. Nearly everyone goes through a rough period in their life when psychotherapy could be helpful for getting back on track.

Let’s work together so I can help you figure out ways you or your child can grow and navigate family , friendships, relationships, spirituality, and work,.
The bad news is that anxiety and depression can show up in different ways and at different times because we’re all different people. Difficulty communicating feelings? Struggling with low self-esteem? Physical, professional, spiritual, social, or mental self-care non-existent or going down the drain? Sometimes anxiety or depression can seem like it hits you or your child out of the blue. Many people struggle during life transitions. They find themselves experiencing fear of the unknown or difficulty making sense of the past. The good news is that you don't have to face these challenges alone.

I do individual therapy, as well as family and couples counseling.
I emphasize a collaborative approach to therapy--I bring 30 years of clinical experience, as well as enthusiasm, hope, and a dose of humor, and ask only that you bring an openness to change. Together, we identify specific life goals and generate plans to achieve them. Ultimately, you will come to understand that you make perfect sense; you may just not have been able to use this self-awareness to make the most productive decisions. My strong suit is quickly identifying underlying problems and patterns, as well as personal strengths and resources, and from there we chart your personal path.

My goal as a therapist is to provide a warm environment that allows clients to safely explore areas of dissatisfaction in their lives and identify goals for growth. Much of my work is based on cognitive-behavioral therapy, but I believe the relationship between therapist and client is the most essential element in allowing therapy to progress. As an experienced clinician of over 25 years, I specialize in treating mood disorders (depression and bipolar) and anxiety, as well as working with family -related concerns such as divorce, parenting, and relationships.

I believe one of the most healing things we can do is begin to understand our stories and how it affects our everyday life and relationships. Many of us carry our past traumas into our present-day lives. These traumas can manifest in many different ways such as anxiety, emotional numbness or relationship challenges. The clients I work with have oftentimes experienced complex relational traumas in childhood and dysfunctional family dynamics. Through these difficult experiences, we oftentimes develop coping strategies and protective behaviors. These strategies were often helpful and necessary but may no longer be serving you now.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
