Sometimes in life, we struggle with our mental health. We can get off course striving to understand our thoughts and emotions. Trying to figure out how to live life on life’s terms can sometimes lead us into emotional uncertainties, which affect our occupation, finances, families, relationships, social connections, and substance use. At times in our lives, others can’t relate or understand us, so they label us or try to put us in a box which restricts our freedom to be ourselves. Are you in a season of your life when you find it difficult to connect with your family, friends, co-workers, or your social network? Want some help?

Many people are haunted by interpersonal traumas and other wounds that prevent them from living fulfilling lives. Their lives may appear "perfect" from the outside but they struggle with shame, psychological symptoms, engage in self-sabotaging behavior, and feel isolated. I strive to provide a supportive, collaborative, and safe space for individuals to work through their inner experiences to increase awareness of how and why they feel stuck and not satisfied. My focus in therapy is to help individuals explore how their ways of relating to others may hinder growth and wellness and create psychological distress.

I am a mental health clinician who practices in both Maryland and Michigan. Treatment will vary just as our individual personalities vary. I am looking for clients who are unsure of what they want or need but are willing to explore. I am looking for clients who have goals but need help starting the journey. I am also looking for clients who know what they want, they have begun the work, but need more support. No matter the stage or phase of treatment, I am looking for clients willing to do the work.

I have extensive history working with individuals suffering from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders or with the family members who love them. I also love working with women struggling with anxiety, OCD, disordered eating, and depression. Through therapy I hope to open doors to new ideas and make life feel worth living. I put focus on establishing healthy boundaries and developing coping skills to deal with current life stressors, while examining the potential underlying issues and treating the whole person. I hope to help my clients reveal their true, authentic selves and harness their full potentials.

I am currently accepting new clients at this time with limited availability. So much of our daily life involves interactions and relationships with others. Often these relationships are affecting us more than we realize and may cause difficulties in the home, at work or socially. I am here to help families, couples, and individuals understand how to better manage their challenges such as depression, anxiety, personal loss, infidelity, substance abuse, and self-esteem issues. As a couples and family therapist, I am experienced and trained to focus on relational issues as well as the everyday struggles of the individual.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
