Hi there, I'm Laurie! Do you wish providers would look at you through a whole person lens instead of discussing health and mental health separately? Do you want a provider for your child who is playful and skilled at engaging children? Are you an adult who likes a more personal, connected approach to therapy? Do you have a teen who has had difficulty connecting to other providers? Well look no further! I enjoy using storytelling, videos, and conversation to help clients of all ages improve self-esteem, self-worth and gain a better understanding of sense of self.

Whether I am working with an adolescent or emerging adult, I will ensure that each client strives to reach their own personal goals, by providing tools and guidance to help with feelings of anxiety, depression, peer relationship struggles and more.
Facing life challenges can be strenuous for all of us, and we may not know which way to turn for help. At times, we reach out to our own family and friends for help, but that is not always supportive. Who can we turn to then, to help us understand and navigate through these emotionally difficult times? I'm driven by my passion to bring overall wellness and hope to my clients, by providing a safe, non-judgmental and empathetic environment. I will work collaboratively with my clients, to help strengthen relationships and facilitate growth.

I have a special interest in working with child and adolescent adoptees and their families to support their connection and bonding.
I believe that the power of therapy comes through the understanding of how self defeating patterns of behavior interfere with our ability to have a happy and productive life. I believe that focusing and building on our strengths will enhance our functioning. Examining our behavior is critical to developing healthy options for ourselves and in our relationships. Through an open and respectful process we will examine the areas in your life that have interfered with your ability to make positive, forward thinking choices. As you develop different coping strategies the hope of change will support healing and growth.

Some of my experience includes dealing with ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome and Traits, Parenting Issues, Adoption, Anxiety (including PTSD and OCD), Depression and other Mood Disorders, Marital/Couple Problems, Adult- Teen Developmental Issues and Conflicts, Problems of Early Childhood, Personality Disorders, Transitions in life such as Divorce or Loss, and formal Cognitive and Personality Assessments.
It takes a lot of courage to seek help, especially in a world that unfairly stigmatizes getting psychological services. Lack of understanding of what therapy is and how people can benefit from it prevents some from using professional services to know and understand themselves better, to improve relationships, and to live more meaningful, fulfilling lives regardless of their challenges. Sometimes people have troubling symptoms due to anxiety, depression, and other disorders and need help to address these symptoms and their causes. I use a variety of approaches to help clients. My goal is to empower clients through a healthy, therapeutic relationship.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
