) and have additional training in psychoanalytic , cognitive behavioral and experiential theories.
My primary focus is working with children and adolescents who are struggling with family discord, parent separation and/or divorce. Since 1996 I have been working within the school system, consulting for an adolescent residential/outpatient therapeutic treatment facility and in private practice. I work with children, adolescents, and their families to improve their skills navigating through life's challenges, transitions, and daily stressors. I also assist people who are feeling depressed, sad, anxious, or dealing with general relationship concerns. Together we develop skills to increase self esteem and coping abilities to promote resilient individuals and more communicative families.

I employ an eclectic psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic approach.
I am a clinical psychologist with 40 years of experience in private practice. I work with adults in individual psychotherapy and couple therapy. I believe that good relationships are essential for a good life, and I enjoy helping others develop better relationships. I have studied and trained with a variety of psychotherapy approaches and techniques. I weave these into a psychodynamically oriented approach which takes into account current and past relationships as well as gaining perspective and understanding of oneself and others. I have been able to help people suffering from problems with mood, anxiety, emotions, relationships, and issues with work and family.

Regardless of age, emotional stress and difficulties can get in the way of reaching one's optimal level of functioning. As a licensed clinical social worker, I provide intensive individual psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. I practice from a psychoanalytic perspective because my professional experience has shown me that this way of working can result in deep and meaningful change that is lasting. I also incorporate other styles and techniques depending on the clinical needs of the individual, some of these include CBT and stress management strategies.

I believe individuals come to talk to a therapist when in emotional pain-- sadness, fear, loneliness, depression, traumas, and uncertainties. I want to help people express their deep concerns and learn what emotional conflicts and transitions are causing discomforts. Understanding inner experience is very helpful with a psychoanalytic therapist who creates with you a trusting place for speaking. Knowing oneself deeply can bring about transformations in the way you feel, have a relationship, and are able to work and create. I look forward to speaking with you and listening to what you need to talk about.

My training has been in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theory.
Life is full of struggles that we all face in our own way. In therapy, we can work together to understand & explore the challenges you face in your everyday life. I work to create a safe, non-judgmental space where we can work to understand you in a deeper, more complete way. Together we can face your troubling thoughts, feelings, & behaviors. As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I will help you navigate your past experiences, thoughts, and emotions, in order for you to gain insight and address your current every day struggles. By recognizing patterns that continue to get in the way, we will open the door to new possibilities.

I have postdoctoral psychoanalytic training and have testified in court as an expert witness on parent-child relationships following divorce.
Feeling chronic negative emotions such as sadness, anger, anxiety, or loneliness is often a sign that something in our relationships has gone awry. By the time we attend psychotherapy, the task of altering our relationships may feel difficult or impossible to navigate alone. As a psychodynamic therapist, I am interested in how your early relationships impact your personality, worldview, attachment, perceptions, and coping mechanisms. Through compassion, challenge and sometimes humor, I aim to help my patients gain insight, learn new ways of relating, and implement change in order to heal, grow, and flourish.

Contemporary psychoanalytic approach is the foundation of my work.
It can be hard to change our habits and ways of relating with ourselves and with others even when old patterns are causing significant emotional pain. For real change to take place, something beyond motivation and a commitment to change is often needed. What can make a real difference involves finding a receptive person and an accepting environment that fosters a deeper understanding of one's self. I strive to provide such a receptive and safe environment to my clients with the hope that they feel listened to, understood, and recognized in their desires to get to know themselves, to connect with others and to feel alive in the world

I work with adults, adolescents and children in psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis. The approach taken respects each person's individuality and the work is done in ways that are suited to each person's style and personality. The frequency and duration of treatment depends on the unique needs of each person - for example, a person may be seeking short-term therapy to deal with a school or work transition, while another person may be seeking longer term treatment to understand longstanding emotional pain or a pattern of unsuccessful relationships.

Life comes with many complex challenges. Sometimes we feel alone or inadequate and experience difficulty being fully authentic with others. Often, we lack the necessary support, or open ourselves up to being hurt by others. Mental health is strongly influenced by our ability to get our needs met. Psychotherapy is a process where we take a close look at your needs, including the thoughts and feelings you have when you feel stuck. By identifying, fleshing out and contextualizing your reactions, we gain a deeper and nuanced understanding of you. This process will help you find freedom of choice and greater fulfillment.

When I see a new patient for the first time, I try to assess what he or she wants from life or from what each person is struggling. I do this with individuals or parents so together so we can determine what is best for him or her or their child at the current time. Sometimes people want to work on one problem and then develop a curiosity about how their minds work. Often in those situations, I work more intensely and more frequency to search for what is meaning to people and how they wants to navigate in the world in a freer way.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
