Seeking professional psychological help can be a complicated undertaking. Some people seek help when in the throes of a crisis, others after a long time trying to fix something that is not right in their life. Family conflict, life transitions, relationship problems, anxieties and depression are some of the reasons people contact me for help. When people seek my assistance I try to understand all the factors (personal, family, work) that are impacting their life. This includes present circumstances and historical influences. In an evaluation I work with people to develop the best plan of treatment for their current situation.

Life comes with many complex challenges. Sometimes we feel alone or inadequate and experience difficulty being fully authentic with others. Other times, we lack the necessary support, or open ourselves up to being hurt by others. Mental health is strongly influenced by our ability to get our needs met. Psychotherapy is a process where we take a close look at your needs, including the thoughts and feelings you have when you feel stuck. By identifying, fleshing out and contextualizing your reactions, we gain a deeper and nuanced understanding of you. This process will help you find freedom of choice and greater fulfillment.

Hello. Currently, I am accepting new clients for depth work, sometimes meeting 2-4 times a week, working on deep change. I help adults address a wide range of emotional, psychological and relational problems. My approach is: we are all human, sometimes humans have problems, sometimes problems have roots in the past AND we all have abilities to help ourselves (and others). A big predictor of successful therapy is the relationship between you and your therapist. I have a collaborative style that is warm and relational. I can help you with self-understanding, self-direction and self-compassion, and to grow in relationships.

When my son was 6 years old he told me that he did not want to play baseball but instead wanted to play soccer. I told him that was fine, but because I knew little about it, it might be harder for me to help coach him. He said to me, "That's alright dad, I'll teach you about soccer then you can teach me back."

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
