I bring to my practice the experience of forty years of professional work with individuals and
couples
, as well as the wisdom and personal growth that I have gained from dealing with my own life challenges. I am particularly effective with clients as they deal with forming and maintaining intimate relationships, sorting through identity and career conflicts, coping with grief and loss, and managing life transitions. Infertility and adoption issues have long been an area of expertise. All these situations are filled with intense emotionality and anguish yet demand solid, clear thinking.

In addition to individuals, I hold a specialization and degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and therefore work with
couples
.
I have tremendous respect for the courage that is required to enter therapy and therefore I aim to meet you wherever you are. I believe that therapy is based on the development of a positive
relationship
between myself and you. We will work together to open up paths for new connections in your life and to deepen other ones. We can explore meaning in those areas of your life which have become less clear through the establishment of a safe and non-judgemental atmosphere.

Years of research indicate the biggest predictor of therapeutic success is the
relationship
developed between the therapist and client. My clients joke that I am not your traditional therapist who sits back and nods. I see myself as a "change agent" whose style is interactive, warm and direct. My philosophy is that you should leave every session with the feeling that you have moved forward with your personal goals.

My therapeutic approach includes a collaborative patient-therapist
relationship
, which emphasizes the client’s strengths and insights and is often based upon a balance of hard work and humor.
As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW-C) in practice for nearly twenty years, I have had the opportunity and privilege to work collaboratively with clients to help them develop greater insight into their relationships, communication patterns, and limiting narratives. For more than a decade I have worked in private practice. Previously, I have had experience working in an intensive outpatient program (IOP), school setting, and community mental health agency. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology from The University of Michigan and a Master of Social Work degree from the National Catholic School of Social Service.

The work of psychotherapy requires a trusting
relationship
- one that can tolerate the warmth that develops as well as the heat that is often necessary for growth.
When my son was 6 years old he told me that he did not want to play baseball but instead wanted to play soccer. I told him that was fine, but because I knew little about it, it might be harder for me to help coach him. He said to me, "That's alright dad, I'll teach you about soccer then you can teach me back."

I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, work stress, life transitions, identity concerns, family dynamics, grief and loss and
relationship
issues.
Life comes with many complex challenges. Sometimes we feel alone or inadequate and experience difficulty being fully authentic with others. Often, we lack the necessary support, or open ourselves up to being hurt by others. Mental health is strongly influenced by our ability to get our needs met. Psychotherapy is a process where we take a close look at your needs, including the thoughts and feelings you have when you feel stuck. By identifying, fleshing out and contextualizing your reactions, we gain a deeper and nuanced understanding of you. This process will help you find freedom of choice and greater fulfillment.

Life is full of change. As we go through this journey we face numerous experiences of loss and transition. Grief is a complicated and delicate matter. There is no time limit on healing. Together we will work on processing the impact of the transitions and adjustments that occur after loss. May it be a loved one,
relationship
, child, or status the feelings that you experience are real and should be addressed. Whether you are processing the loss yourself, or seeking how to support a loved one you have come to the right place.

My treatment interests include adolescent/young adult life transitions (moving away from home, starting a career, marriage, family),
relationship
concerns (peers/parents/partners), anxiety (excessive worry/panic attacks, academic stress), depression (sadness, isolation, low self-esteem), grief, ADHD, and career counseling.
"Adulting" can be complicated. If you're in your teens or twenties, you know what I'm talking about - the pressure is real. Yes, it can be a time of new and exciting experiences, but it can also be fraught with anxiety, confusion, heartbreak, and unexpected forks in the road. Whether you're struggling with problems at school or work, difficult relationships, or just the sense that something is missing from your life, therapy may help. Creating lasting and meaningful change can be challenging but you don't have to do it alone.

The best clients are ones who are motivated to change. I enjoy working with clients who are willing to look at themselves and explore how best to create the changes they desire. I work with their strengths to overcome any hurdles on their way to a better quality of life. Everyone faces challenges. I help clients realize that how you face those challenges can make all the difference. I work with teenagers, adults, and seniors.

Throughout my career, I have worked to help people have better, more meaningful lives where they feel competent to address their problems and feel connected to others who care. And this is only made possible by my providing a therapeutic
relationship
which is warm and respectful. I am interested in understanding how people’s histories and styles affect how they get stuck and how they can change. I have had diversified training and experience. Hopefully, this allows for our finding the best approach for getting unstuck. Some issues I address are life transitions, loss, stress, depression, trauma, anxiety, and
relationship
conflict.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
