When I see a new patient for the first time, I try to assess what he or she wants from life or from what each person is struggling. I do this with individuals or parents so together so we can determine what is best for him or her or their child at the current time. Sometimes people want to work on one problem and then develop a curiosity about how their minds work. Often in those situations, I work more intensely and more frequency to search for what is meaning to people and how they wants to navigate in the world in a freer way.

You may appear high-functioning and put-together on the outside, yet inside you feel weighed down by an eating disorder, history of trauma, or anxiety. You might struggle with perfectionism, shame, or feeling disconnected from your own needs and emotions. What you want is to feel safer in your body, less ruled by rigid rules or anxious thoughts, and more aligned with your values. Your goals may include building self-trust, developing healthier coping strategies, and creating lasting change that allows you to move from survival toward a fuller, more meaningful life.

Anxiety may cause us to struggle with communication, lash out in anger, act on impulses, get lost in our feelings, avoid tasks, distract us from success, and disconnect us from support systems.
This is especially common with children and teens among other struggles such as depression, ADHD, Autism, life transitions, chronic illness, OCD, and lack of self esteem. I will help you tackle these struggles by empowering you to find and use your unique strengths, beliefs, and passions. I am currently licensed in MD, VA, DC, CO and FL.

When my son was 6 years old he told me that he did not want to play baseball but instead wanted to play soccer. I told him that was fine, but because I knew little about it, it might be harder for me to help coach him. He said to me, "That's alright dad, I'll teach you about soccer then you can teach me back."

Life always has a way of throwing curveballs at us and tries to get us to the point of breaking. I work with adults, teens, and kids who struggle to express themselves effectively, navigate challenges in relationships, and heal from difficult past experiences. I often see adults who are feeling overwhelmed or frustrated after trying to manage symptoms of anxiety, ADHD, trauma, or depression on their own. Many of the teens and kids that I see feel a lot of pressure to perform better in school, have difficulties around interacting with their parents or peers, or struggle to motivate themselves without relying on self-criticism. My clients often want skills and strategies so we spend time discussing and practicing them together.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
