Hi I'm Kenzie! One of the bravest things people can do is to reach out for some help, especially in our child, adolescent and young adult years. Growing up can come with all sorts of pressure, confusion, and judgement, leading to anxiety and other strong emotions. Anxiety may cause us to struggle with communication, lash out in anger, act on impulses, get lost in our feelings, avoid tasks, distract us from success, and disconnect us from support systems.

My treatment interests include adolescent /young adult life transitions (moving away from home, starting a career, marriage, family), relationship concerns (peers/parents/partners), anxiety (excessive worry/panic attacks, academic stress), depression (sadness, isolation, low self-esteem), grief, ADHD, and career counseling.
"Adulting" can be complicated. If you're in your teens or twenties, you know what I'm talking about - the pressure is real. Yes, it can be a time of new and exciting experiences, but it can also be fraught with anxiety, confusion, heartbreak, and unexpected forks in the road. Whether you're struggling with problems at school or work, difficult relationships, or just the sense that something is missing from your life, therapy may help. Creating lasting and meaningful change can be challenging but you don't have to do it alone.

My primary focus is working with children and adolescents who are struggling with family discord, parent separation and/or divorce. Since 1996 I have been working within the school system, consulting for an adolescent residential/outpatient therapeutic treatment facility and in private practice. I work with children, adolescents, and their families to improve their skills navigating through life's challenges, transitions, and daily stressors. I also assist people who are feeling depressed, sad, anxious, or dealing with general relationship concerns. Together we develop skills to increase self esteem and coping abilities to promote resilient individuals and more communicative families.

Has your teen been recently diagnosed with a health issue, and you are unsure how to help? Do you see your teen or young adult child struggling with anxiety on a daily basis? Do you wish you could help them manage their painful emotions, but you keep getting shut out? Have you been putting off getting support? During these growing years, teens and young adults find ways of dealing with painful emotions. Sometimes there has been a life event or trigger. Sometimes it is the pain of growing up in a fast-paced world. Therapy can be a safe place for you or your adolescent to explore patterns and healthy ways of coping.

This may involve concerns about an underachieving or acting-out teen , a young adult child experiencing a "failure to launch", or a divorced person struggling to co-parent with and ex-spouse.
In my practice, I work with a diverse clientele: children, adolescents and adults from all backgrounds. My approach is practical and conversational as we explore together the stressors of daily living, relationship concerns, parenting issues, and in some instances, severe psychiatric disorders. Often, clients seek short-term interventions, though for some difficulties therapy continues for an extended period. I allow my clients to set the agenda for our work together and decide what sort of help is needed.

Whether it's for yourself or your teen , please reach out to discuss your situation.
Welcome! I help teens and adults with all types of eating disorders, disordered eating, mood and anxiety issues, and life transitions. Given the world we live in, it can be hard sometimes to sort out "normal" attempts to be healthy and fit vs disordered patterns of eating, exercising or thoughts about food and weight. Your eating issues may have suddenly become problematic or they may have been around "forever". Either way, you deserve to get help to bring balance and flexibility back into your eating and thoughts about food and your body. Learning how to manage mood changes, anxiety and stress during life changes is key.

Many people experience uncertainty and anxiety about consulting a therapist. I believe it shows courage to seek out psychotherapy. You may be struggling with serious emotional issues, deep personal crises, relationship distress, or a sense of distance with your child or adolescent . You may simply feel that something is "off" in your life. Many people I work with simply want to get more from their lives - more joy, more connection, more serenity and more general well-being. To help you reach your goals, I collaborate with you to create a therapy environment that is warm, safe, supportive, challenging when needed, and authentic.

Throughout my career, I have worked to help people have better, more meaningful lives where they feel competent to address their problems and feel connected to others who care. And this is only made possible by my providing a therapeutic relationship which is warm and respectful. I am interested in understanding how people’s histories and styles affect how they get stuck and how they can change. I have had diversified training and experience. Hopefully, this allows for our finding the best approach for getting unstuck. Some issues I address are life transitions, loss, stress, depression, trauma, anxiety, and relationship conflict.

SE HABLA ESPANOL I believe psychotherapy is a process that helps a person connect deeply with her/himself. By becoming more aware, through the therapeutic relationship, a person comes to understand the basis of his/her conflicts and developmental challenges, which can be manifested by symptoms of depression, anxiety or other distress. I use an interactive approach that focuses on peoples' strengths as well as exploring where they feel stuck. A goal is to help people see themselves realistically, and then to increase their ability to manage thoughts and feelings constructively, enhancing their relationships and their sense of purpose and well-being in the world.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
