Today is a good day. You have taken the first step to a better life by reaching out, and I am happy to be considered as your therapist. I believe caring for our mental health is equally important as caring for our physical health. Let's work through the challenges that might seem too big to overcome. Our goal-driven conversations will provide new insight and skills for lifting the mood and enhancing relationships. Together, we will tear down the walls that are holding you back from emotional wellness so you might thrive and not simply survive.

Everyone has a story. What is yours? How many chapters does yours include and what are their titles? Your past is likely quite diverse, filled with your best and most joyful moments as well as moments filled with heartache and pain, or feelings of disappointment, anger, sadness, shame, or guilt. You may have spent time wishing that some of these chapters could have been written differently, reflecting different personal, professional, or relational decisions, ability for self-acceptance or acceptance of others, ability to forgive, or even forget.

Invest in yourself…it will have the biggest pay off! Everyone experiences challenges and stressful life events. How we view those challenges and the way we approach them can greatly shape the outcome. Many of the stressful life events we encounter center around change and transitions. Going from a house full of kids to an empty nest, blending families, becoming a parent, changing careers, moving, dealing with the loss of a loved one, separation or divorce…the list could go on and on. However, the common thread is change! Change is hard. But with change comes opportunity….the opportunity to shape and create the best life you can.

I work with people who are grieving the loss of a loved one from death....but also those who have been diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness, those suffering the loss of relationships, independence, career or loss of community from moving to a new place, infidelity and those dealing with the loss of a beloved pet. Life is full of transitions. Many people end up feeling isolated, like the world is going on around you and you're just standing still, questioning whether you're going crazy or having a mental health issue because you're experiencing feelings you've never felt before.

I believe that we learn unhealthy and unproductive ways of thinking that can lead to feelings and behaviors that are detrimental to the fullness of our lives. You have strengths. Yes, you do. Maybe ones that you don't even know you have. Together we can uncover those strengths and begin exploring how they can move your life forward in your career, relationships, parenting, and personal growth. We will focus on what is right with you and how you can expand that out to greater circles in your life. Having a coach, cheerleader, and calming support can make all the difference in overcoming longstanding and/or seemingly overwhelming obstacles. One of our clinicians can be that person for you.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
