Life is a journey and therapy works best as a meeting fellow travelers on the road. We can walk together for a while and through our conversations create a warm, genuine, and engaged space where you can be curious, explore, and uncover insights that are already within you. I specialize in working with adult individuals, teens, and couples facing internal and external challenges that throw up roadblocks to living a whole, authentic life. I have a particular affinity for working with artists, activists, other healing professionals, and intercultural and premarital couples.

You’ve been in survival mode for so long. Sleepless nights, restless thoughts, and that lingering feeling of panic returning, sometimes unexpectedly, like it did when you were a kid. You’re doing your best to manage, but old habits are creeping back in—overeating, drinking more than you'd like—and it's leaving you wondering: Is there something wrong with me? Will this ever change? It’s hard to take care of yourself when your body and mind feel so overwhelmed. You’ve been putting on a brave face for others, keeping it together for the people who depend on you, but deep down, it’s exhausting. You're carrying it alone.

From the first time we meet and throughout our journey, I will invest my full attention into listening to your unique story. This is so important because you are the expert on you. We all have the power to heal ourselves from within. Sometimes all that's needed is a little redirection and a different perspective. Other times it is necessary to learn new coping skills and approaches to difficult situations.

I believe we are all just the stories we tell ourselves. There is nothing good or bad about this – it is just how we craft and make sense of our life. You and I may have the same exact experience of something, and you may hear, notice, and even value things I had not. If we are made up of our stories and our stories are extremely subjective, how do we make good sense of the world around us? You have all the answers inside you.

I greatly value the opportunity to empower people in their pursuit of well being. You may have a specific concern or a general sense that you wish to move through life differently. I strive to incorporate your values, identities, and unique life circumstances into therapy, working with you as a whole person rather than as a collection of symptoms. I believe that stress and pain are unavoidable parts of life, and that reactions to these can add to distress. In developing and working towards goals together, I consider the quality of our relationship to be a powerful source of healing.

Codependency Therapists
What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
