Your story is threaded with mystery and purpose. Sometimes we journey through dark landscapes of chaos and unraveling. Things happen: an injustice, we loose our job, our health declines, the place we call home disappears like sand between our fingers, we lose the ones we love, or we are betrayed by someone we trusted. Suddenly, we are faced with the shocking absurdity of reality. "I can't believe this is my life! Please, don't let this be my life!" When we are lost, the importance of someone bearing witness to our severely-wounded self is invaluable. I consider it an honor to walk alongside of you and your one, unique story.

I specialize in sexual abuse/ assault, grief/loss, life transitions, and crisis intervention.
Are you a caregiver of a child who has experienced a trauma and you don't know how to support them? Would you like support in navigating some changes you've noticed? Perhaps you have seen disturbed sleeping patterns, changes in appetite, regression to more infantile behaviors, and changes in academic performance. As a caregiver, navigating your child's trauma experience can leave some uncertainty and may have you feeling alone. The trauma experience that your child encountered is not meant to be done alone and requires a village, allow me to be a part of that village. Is your child resistant to doing therapy?

I also treat emotional responses to certain life stressors (e.g., bereavement, childhood sexual abuse, separation/divorce, career).
The clients I work with tend to be introspective, insightful, responsible, and intelligent and are capable of working through their life difficulties. This can be accomplished on a short-term or on a long-term basis. My clients "bring much to the table" but tend to undervalue their worth in one or more areas and may have low self-esteem/confidence. I have worked with very diverse racial and ethnic populations, including first- or second-generation immigrants from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Canada. I have also worked extensively with many LGBTQ clients.

Has the state of the world left you fucking exhausted? Dragging yourself through the day fakin’ it ‘til ya makin’ it? Spending your “free time” staring at the clock and a teapot like The Beast, or doom-scrolling Matt Matthew’s chicken banter because throat-punchin’ a bitch will catch you a charge? Does Taylor Swift’s “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me” sound like your goddamn inner critic? Does life feel like Severance, like your dead-ass tired body clocks in while your mind checks the fuck out? Can you relate to Olivia Benson’s William Lewis arc and the brutal fallout that followed? Yeah. Let’s do something about that shit.

You look like you're holding it all together—but inside, you're exhausted. Maybe you're always on alert, overthinking, people-pleasing, or wondering why it's so hard to relax. You may struggle with relationships, trust, or feeling connected to yourself. If so, your nervous system may still be responding to experiences it learned long ago. I specialize in helping adults heal from complex PTSD (C-PTSD), attachment trauma, and developmental trauma. Together, we'll understand the patterns that once helped you survive and gently create new ways of relating to yourself and others. I am independently licensed in MD, WV, and VA.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
