My expertise is in working on issues such as improving relationships, coping with anxiety and/or depression, life transitions (particularly
pregnancy
and early parenthood), and healing from trauma.
Do you want to feel more connected to others? How about to yourself? Are things from your past getting in the way? Therapy allows for the time and space to focus on you. I believe all of us are capable of change, and therapy is one way to begin that change process. I work from an empowerment approach - in other words, I know that you are the expert about who you are, where you're from, and where you're going. My role is to provide feedback, guidance, and a safe environment to process that journey.

"All change is loss, and all loss must be mourned." This quote by Harry Levenson normalizes the feelings we all have when big changes occur, even good ones. I provide a safe, supportive environment for you to examine recent life events and their impact on you and your relationships. The therapy relationship is of primary importance to me. Together, we can formulate some coping strategies to address your current difficulties. I seek to help you make connections between the past and the present so that you can create the future you want.

I have extensive experience helping adolescents, providing
perinatal
support, and am certified in family and couples therapy practice by the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
We all face stressors in life that can become overwhelming. Feeling stuck with our own negative thoughts or anxiety about new changes; repeatedly engaging in the same fights with our partner or spouse; worrying that we cannot support our children in the way we want - these are all universal experiences. Everyone faces obstacles, but not everyone has to remain feeling helpless, hopeless, or stagnant. It is at these times when it makes the most sense to reach out for support and when therapy can be most effective.

Anxiety and sadness do not need to control you. Therapy provides a safe and caring setting for you to work through these issues and reach resolution. Together you will become stronger, develop insight, practice mindfulness, and learn new skills. Hope is here.

I have a sub-specialization in Reproductive Health--assisting with issues of infertility,
pregnancy
loss,
perinatal
mood disorders, birth trauma or other reproductive concerns.
My specialty is centered around those who are undergoing life transitions, such as going from adolescence to adulthood; transitioning from college; building a family; or other adjustment issues with which people may struggle. Whether I'm working with an individual, couple, or a group, I continually seek out feedback as to how treatment is progressing for them. Therapy should be an effective collaborative effort. Additionally, I incorporate mind and body integration techniques, such as yoga and relaxation, which can relieve stress, anxiety and be helpful for numerous other issues.

One focus of my practice is Reproductive Health: women/couples seeking a
pregnancy
, mourning a
miscarriage
, struggling with
postpartum
difficulties or feeling concerned about either traditionally formed, adoptive or ART families.
Having witnessed and participated in twenty years of clients' progress, I have great confidence in this powerful process. We all want to feel optimistic and enjoy our lives, with minimal stress, doubts, anxiety, depression, and confusion. Most of us have strong and centered parts that were buried or muted as a result of trauma, loss or other painful experiences. Learning to empower these healthy parts helps us manage inevitable difficult thoughts and feelings more calmly and effectively and to enjoy healthy relationships. Depending on individual situations, short term therapy or Skype sessions may be possible.

Women face many difficulties on their journey to motherhood. The most common difficulties are difficulties conceiving, stress preparing for the arrival of the baby, a birth experience that did not go the way they expected, and overwhelmed once the baby is here. My clients have a variety of
perinatal
experiences; struggles with emotions during
pregnancy
,
postpartum
as well
miscarriage
and infant loss. If you have lost your baby, it is a very difficult time; a loss of hopes and dreams and grieving in a world that does not have rituals or ways to respond to you.

I created
Postpartum
Wellness so that compassionate, warm, and expert counselors can be the support that DMV moms are looking for!.
You delivered a baby within the past year. Motherhood hasn’t turned out the way you expected. In fact, you feel like the lows outnumber the highs and you’ve found yourself feeling guilty, embarrassed, and disappointed about your thoughts. You hoped that by waiting it out, your thoughts would change, and you would eventually feel better. So, you find yourself searching the internet to see if what you’re feeling is normal. When you think about looking into therapists, a strong sense of defeat begins to fall over you. It’s exhausting to keep up a false front.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
