I also have experience addressing issues like codependency,
family
and relationship issues.
I look forward to bearing witness to your healing journey. It is an honor for clients to share their experiences with me. It is important for me to have a nurturing and empathic relationship with my clients that shows unconditional positive regard. Meeting my clients where they are and meeting them at their pace in the therapeutic process is important in order to foster client empowerment in the therapeutic process. I believe that childhood events impact our present and how we connect to the world around us. I believe that therapy is a great tool to begin your healing process and it's never too late to start!

Research shows that teachers, doctors, nurses, counselors, social workers, pastors, and CEOs face unique challenges that can leave them drained of the energy they need to be effective on the job and in personal and
family
relationships.
I have been working with individuals, couples, and families in the Maryland area for 20 years, During my time here I have had the privileged to serve as a college chaplain, youth pastor, university professor, and mental health clinic director. At present I divide my time between serving mental health and substance abuse clinics as a clinical supervisor and consultant and running a thriving private practice. I specialize in helping other professionals fight off burnout and establish an effective work/life balance. This become increasingly important with the additional stress Covid-19 has placed on all of us.

At The Couple and
Family
Clinic, we consider our work to be both a great privilege and responsibility to provide the highest quality care for the people we work with.
*I am currently not accepting new clients* Did you know that the quality of the relationship you have with your therapist is strongly linked to successful therapeutic outcomes? This is why my goal is to provide every person I see with an emotionally safe space, free of judgment. You want somebody who genuinely cares, who is curious and hopeful. I encourage people to explore new ways of thinking about their experiences and different ways of expressing themselves. I aim for the people I work with to leave each session feeling more empowered, with a sense of agency, and able to learn what they're capable of doing.

As a therapist, I work with children, adults, couples, and families as they navigate various life transitions. This can include reorganization within the
family
system, through either a new marriage, a separation or divorce, birth of a new
family
member, the exploration of alternative
family
building options, or various other life events. Our lives are constantly in flux, and we all sometimes need support to navigate these decision points and learn to better manage the anxiety they create.

My specialized training in
family
systems theory and practice enables me to help people not only problem-solve specific issues but to do so with an understanding of the context in which they manifest themselves; be they associated with one's
family
of origin, relationships, work or some other source.
Utilizing a competency-based approach, I assist my clients to reframe how they perceive the issues in their lives; to work through emotional conflict and learn new behaviors to manage and enrich their experience. My style is direct, compassionate and interactive.
Having begun my career as a teacher and having raised four children, I have an intimate knowledge of child development and educational needs. Through thirty years of practice and specialized training, I have expanded my background to include personal coaching, couples/
family
counseling, addictions recovery, men's health and management of chronic conditions such as mental illness and cancer.

NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME All of us at times find ourselves overwhelmed by problems that we struggle to cope with on our own, whether around difficult relationships, life transitions,
family
stress, disruptive traumatic memories, or a sense of isolation or despair. My goal is to help my clients better recognize and understand their feelings, thoughts and behaviors and to mobilize their own innate strengths to reduce suffering, create positive change, and feel stronger and more connected.

I specialize in an active, short-term problem solving treatment. While enough of the past must be understood to make sense of the present, this goal oriented short-term therapy is oriented toward the present and future and does not emphasize pathology and the past. Although there is no limit to the number of sessions that can be scheduled, my attitude toward time is to create positive change as quickly as possible and practical.
This therapy utilizes particular strengths and aptitudes that every client brings with them. These strengths are used in the most productive way to ameliorate problems and introduce flexibility

We all carry wounds we have accumulated throughout life, and these can have a great impact on us, even when we’re not always aware of it. I work with individuals, couples, and families on a myriad of issues, including depression, anxiety,
family
and relationship struggles, ADHD, addictions, and more. I approach both individuals and relationships from a strengths-based perspective, working from a trauma-informed perspective grounded in attachment theory, tending towards humanistic and psychodynamic approaches to therapy.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
