(I am not currently accepting new clients into my practice.) I'm very comfortable working with adolescents and have been able to provide them with a safe, supportive and non-judgmental setting in which to explore their conflicts around family, school, and relationships as well as to consider their hopes and anxieties about the future. Typically, my clients enter therapy to work on mood and relationship issues, school/work performance problems (including motivation), and anger issues. I also have a great deal of experience working with adults in individual, family, and couples' therapy, and I offer parenting guidance.

Life isn't always what we expect it to be. And while family and friends can be great supports, sometimes we need an objective person to talk to who isn't personally connected to us. That's where seeing a therapist can help; you don't have to figure it all out by yourself. I provide a comfortable, caring atmosphere where you can speak freely without fear of judgment. We'll focus on the things that are important to you.

My clinical work encompasses attachment, psychodynamic , family systems, cognitive behavioral, gender-affirming, alternative relationships, trauma-focused, and mindfulness-based modalities.
Life is a journey. Sometimes you can travel alone, but there are times in everyone’s life when they could use someone to walk with them and help them reach their goals. I believe everyone is doing the best they can at all times, sometimes that means checking off all of the things on the to-do list, and other times, that means stumbling out of bed. I enjoy assisting people in living their most authentic life; to help figure out what went so right that they were able to check off all those items, or to help identify the barriers to getting out of bed and getting on that journey.

With individuals struggling with anxiety, trauma, substance abuse and other mental health concerns, my approach is informed by Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, 12-Step Facilitation, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
I have been practicing for 18 years, and have a very strong expertise in relationships (couples therapy, relationship conflict, infidelity, divorce, dating). I also specialize in addictions and working with high-achieving individuals. My approach involves helping clients develop insight about why they are finding themselves "stuck," while also teaching useful skills that facilitate behavior change; both are crucial for lasting change to occur. Insight provides understanding and self-compassion. Skills help us function better in our day-to-day lives. My work with clients is empathic, collaborative, practical and often involves a deeper exploration of past experiences that shape current thoughts, feelings & behaviors.

I have been in the private practice of psychodynamic psychiatry for over three decades. I provide psychotherapy and prescribe medication only when indicated as an adjunct to your psychotherapy. I offer a safe, warm and trusting environment in which you can discuss your deepest concerns and you can feel that you are being listened to and truly heard. Together we would work to understand the conflictual issues that are contributing to your difficulties and that are preventing you from achieving your goals in your interpersonal, occupational and academic life.

As a therapist, I am a firm believer that changing your perspective changes your experience. My goal is to help clients recognize that thoughts impact emotions, which directly influence behavior. "It's all about perspective", that's my motto! Thriving Thoughts Therapy's main focus is on creating a safe space for you to grow, challenge current thought processes, implement coping skills/self care, and walk away with a renewed state of mind. This is achieved through an eclectic approach, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, person-centered therapy, the practice of mindfulness, and career counseling.

I employ cognitive-behavioral, family systems, psychodynamic , short-term solution focus, supportive reflection, dialectical behavior, grief and loss therapy and mindfulness models in my practice.
There is nothing like being listened to and understood on a deep level, with genuine interest, unconditional positive regard, congruence, empathy and acceptance. This is what I strive to offer in therapy, as we explore together your hopes and dreams, your losses and regrets, your longings and fears. Many people come to therapy to free themselves from self-defeating patterns, maladaptive behaviors and the legacy of past traumas, so they can be more truly themselves in relation to others and live with greater satisfaction and meaning.

Although I focus on the individual when developing an intervention that will allow that person to find their inner strength, my work with clients is primarily from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy perspective. Becoming more aware of damaging automatic thoughts and acquiring the ability to revise cognitions impacts one's behaviors and ultimately may lead to positive change. The intimate process of making the subconscious conscious is a fundamental step towards growth and change.

Sorrow and sadness can come from many changes in our lives, such as the death of a loved one, burnout or loss of a career, a sudden illness or even a wanted shift in our path. With the addition of stressors and limitations in our life due to the lasting effects of COVID-19, many people struggle with how to cope. While the course of adjustment may be arduous and challenging, you do not have to trudge it alone. Please refer refer to my website, SeraphinCounseling.com for more of my story.

I draw from several methods, including psychodynamic , humanistic, and cognitive approaches, to find the tools that fit your needs.
We all yearn for those moments when something suddenly becomes clear: a relationship that you are ready to embrace or one that you are ready to end, a new path you want to pursue or an old pattern you need to let go. I see therapy as a way of guiding you towards those moments of clarity and authenticity while also, just as importantly, providing the groundwork for the ongoing, day-to-day, process of developing personal satisfaction and growth. My role is to help support you in that journey, whether you are facing anxiety, depression, or life changes.

I lean toward a psychodynamic orientation, and integrate techniques and concepts from cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and EMDR therapies.
I believe the first and most sacred job of a therapist is to create a safe, nurturing space where you are fully seen and heard. From that space, I will walk with you along your path of growth and healing, helping to guide you on your journey.

I take an integrative approach to therapy and tailor interventions to match your needs, using modern psychodynamic approaches and ACT as my foundation.
I greatly value the opportunity to empower people in their pursuit of well being. You may have a specific concern or a general sense that you wish to move through life differently. I strive to incorporate your values, identities, and unique life circumstances into therapy, working with you as a whole person rather than as a collection of symptoms. I believe that stress and pain are unavoidable parts of life, and that reactions to these can add to distress. In developing and working towards goals together, I consider the quality of our relationship to be a powerful source of healing.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
