You are sick of constantly feeling anxious, guilty, and that you are never “enough.” I know how hard it can be to ask for help when you are the one who is usually supporting others. Maybe you’ve tried self-help or therapy in the past, but are now ready to do deeper work to make lasting change.

My favorite quote is “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how I react to it.” This quote is the embodiment of what causes our stress. Often times the things outside of our control (past/present) cause us the most turmoil. Treatment will focus on working together to help you understand how perspective, core beliefs and automatic thoughts can determine your actions and world view, in order to improve and maximize your potential for happiness.

It takes courage and energy to change, so be proud of yourself for pursuing the support you deserve! Do you feel stuck, overwhelmed or invalidated? When people face challenges in their lives, they can sometimes lose touch with their inner strength, resilience and capacity to grow. They may find themselves falling into unhelpful patterns of self-doubt, anxiety, and trouble in relationships. Some develop a strong critical inner voice which makes it even harder to feel better. Therapy can help you experience emotional relief, validation and help you reconnect to your authentic self.

I whole-heartedly believe in each individual's unique ability to find their true Self, the person they were meant to become. From a centered existence one is better able to make choices that promote health, supportive relationships, and passionate pursuits. At times, one may find what once was easy has become more difficult. One's emotional and perceptual landscape may become unfamiliar, what one allows others to see may not fit with how one really feels, one's path may become less certain. Therapy provides the acceptance and space with which to find oneself, perhaps for the first time.

Therapy is not education or advice-giving. People are unique, so elements of therapy are tailored because healing is different for everybody. My treatment approach is an atmosphere were you can speak your mind safely, to someone who listens, listens intelligently, and cares is important. I believe a successful counseling experience depends on the therapists ability to understand and respect the unique concerns, background, and context of each patient. I am committed to achieving such an understanding in every counseling relationship.

Life happens, which can foster a need for healing and connection. I’ve learned that as humans, we often avoid our pain and discomfort which can keep us stuck. Depression, anxiety and trauma can often be debilitating. Learning about yourself and how to obtain your wants and needs in life is so important. Doing “the work” needed for change can be hard. As your ally and advocate, I will be present with you and in support of you, throughout your “work.”

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
