Is your
teenager
dealing with intense emotions like anxiety, anger or sadness? Are you tired of frequent family arguments? Is your family going through stressfull changes like divorce or loss of a loved one? When children don't have a way to process their internal struggles they often act out or withdraw. Teenagers see the world in a different way and face different struggles than adults. I am a licensed clinical social worker and specialize in working with teenagers and their families. I tailor sessions to address my clients' specific needs and to achieve their goals.

Are you a parent of a young child feeling frustrated by your child's temper tantrums and behavioral problems in school? Are you the parent of a
teenager
(s) who is tired of dealing with seemingly never-ending disrespect, and you long for drama-free nights and weekends at home? Perhaps you're a
teenager
dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship and/or friendship problems, and need someone to talk to who can listen objectively. Alternatively, maybe none of these describe you, but you are feeling "lost" and looking for direction, meaning, self-acceptance and unconditional self-love. You are not alone!

Are you feeling invisible? Angry about a breakup? Have you recently experienced a loss/death? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you experiencing more pain, burnout, and/or fatigue than normal? Does your
adolescent
need extra support? Is your family/relationship falling apart? If your answer to any of these questions is "Yes," or even if you have questions of your own, it may be time to reach out and talk through those thoughts and feelings. I would be delighted to be the person you reach out to.

My experience comes from working in a domestic violence/rape crisis center, an inpatient
adolescent
psychiatric facility, and an outpatient child psychiatric rehabilitation program.
I can understand and respect the feelings associated with seeking mental health treatment and the hesitation to engage in treatment. I commend you for taking the steps to not only seek out treatment but to also explore which therapist you feel would be best for you. I look forward to taking the next steps with you on your journey as you process the life changes you are facing, trauma you have endured, relationship issues, or any other obstacles or stressors you may be facing. I work with children, teens, and adults.

Is there an anxious voice in your head that sometimes speaks at full volume? Do you feel alone, uncertain, or "less than"? Or maybe you feel like you just can't stay on top of your life. You procrastinate and only get things done by self-medicating with panic? You may have habits you don't feel good about... you overeat, shop too much, spend countless hours online or in front of tv, or get too much or too little sleep. You might feel stuck, frustrated, or like something is missing. Or maybe you are a parent who feels worried and unsure about how to help a child or
adolescent
who is struggling?

As a Christian counselor, I approach treatment from a worldview that believes individuals are unique and gifted, created with meaning and purpose, and made to have a relationship with God and others. Because of brokenness in ourselves and in the world, we experience conflict and struggle, often severe enough to impact our ability to function each day and find joy in living. When we are able to understand our experiences in context of what is true, healing begins.

I began working in the mental health field in 2007 as part of a therapy team and in 2013 opened Ahimsa Counseling with the mission to provide LGBTQIA affirming and culturally competent counseling to individuals in Harford County. I work with adolescents (16 and up) and adults, with a specialization in trauma informed and healing centered care. I utilize strength based client focused therapies including EMDR, CBT, EFT, and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in order to assist clients processing through and healing prior trauma. This work aids clients in empowerering themselves while they recover, grow, and learn healthier ways of being.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
