My work is wide in scope, but overall focuses on client concerns ranging from trauma and complex trauma, anxiety, depression, sexual assault, isolation, relationship struggles, low self-esteem, LGTBQIA+ related stressors, complicated family dynamics, to life transitions.
Often, we worry that our problems aren't "bad enough" or think we should be able to resolve things ourselves. But what if we don't have to? In a society that rewards toughing it out and perfectionism, I work with you to embrace or overcome your challenges and learn to love the complicated parts of you; making room for enhanced connection and transformation.

If you are looking to unpack historical or racial trauma I am a safe space for that, as I rely heavily on feminist principles and analyzing the ways marginalization may leave us feeling powerless.
My experience lies in working with LGBTQ+ or queer people of color who suffer from anxiety, depression, and traumatic experiences. As a queer African American woman, I know what it feels like to feel crushed by systemic oppression and not know what to do next to move forward. I am here to help you work towards liberation and freedom!

My typical clientele looks like, couples, individuals experiencing trauma, and teens/young adults struggling with sports injuries, peer pressure, college/work transitions.
I work primarily with people who have experienced trauma and couples who are looking to work on their communication. Clients and couples who are introspective tend to thrive in therapy with me. If you often ask yourself, “What makes me feel this way?” or “Is this normal?”—you’re not alone. I work with people navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more, helping them explore their thought patterns. When we understand how we think, we can better understand the behaviors that follow. My sessions focus on uncovering those connections and building insight that leads to meaningful change.

As a trauma informed therapist I understand that stressful experiences show up in many different ways.
Accepting new clients! Have you been struggling with getting things done, being kind to yourself, saying "no" and setting boundaries, or feel like your anxiety has been getting in the way of doing what you want to do and being present in your life? I specialize in issues of anxiety, communication, improving mood, exploring identity, and increasing self-compassion and confidence. I know the importance of establishing a trusting and safe therapeutic relationship, and start by having a conversation about what you are looking for support with and how we can work on that together.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. I want to help you achieve whatever solutions and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the therapeutic process as much as possible and experiencing yourself in new ways. My hope is that you take this leap of faith and see how I can best support you. We can only do the best that we can.

I enjoy working with a variety of adults 18+ to elder adults who are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflict, grief, life changes, bipolar disorders, and victims of narcissists.
Are work, life, or family situations making you feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed? Or is the past refusing to stay in the past? Then you found your therapist! We can explore everything from daily struggles to the depths of soul together, and do so in a warm, accepting, positive, and non-judgmental space. I love hearing people's stories, and from these stories, I can help you close chapters and create new ones. Hello, my name is Jenica (like Jessica, but with an "n" instead of "ss") and I've been a therapist since Sept 1, 2011. I'm licensed in AL, WI, MD, DC, and DE, with my home base in Alabama currently.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
