Substance Use Therapists in Baltimore, MD
Starting therapy can take courage—especially if you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or misunderstood for a long time. It is a space that seeks vulnerability, and I believe meaningful change happens when therapy feels collaborative—built on authenticity, trust, and compassion. You don’t need to have the “right words” or a clear plan on when you start. Therapy isn’t about perfection or quick fixes; it’s about learning new ways to respond to life while honoring where you are right now.

As a licensed psychologist, I specialize in the treatment of individuals with OCD, anxiety disorders, and substance use difficulties, as well as families of individuals who struggle in these ways.
You might be someone who is plagued by doubts. You fear that something awful will happen and feel the need to protect yourself or others from the threat. Your family and friends might try to reassure you, but you just keep imagining worst case scenarios. Perhaps you find yourself engaging in unhelpful behaviors that get in the way of the things that are important to you. Nobody can understand why you keep making these choices, despite their negative consequences. I hope to navigate these challenges with you in a safe and affirming space, where you feel accepted and understood.

Hi! I work primarily with teenagers and adults with histories of trauma and emotional abuse, especially as they navigate setting boundaries in relationships, expressing their needs, and communicating more effectively. I love supporting clients as they invest in their mental health and my hope is that our time together empowers them to make positive change and learn how to advocate for themselves. The value of self-advocacy is important to me! I also enjoy working with teens experiencing behavioral issues and their parents, and individuals with histories of substance abuse, life stressors, anxiety, and depression.

Growing up as a child, with a parent being diagnosed with a mental health disorder, I experienced at first hand some of the problems that both individuals and family members are faced with. I watched as my parent was admitted over and over into mental health facilities. Not understanding why so many. I only knew that it was affecting my parent in a bad way as well as the family. This experience lead me into the field with the hope of lending a helping hand and a caring heart to help individuals like my parent obtain a sense of wellness.

I help people who feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, trauma, or substance use better understand what’s driving those patterns and learn how to respond differently.
You might feel stuck in patterns you can’t seem to break—whether that’s anxiety that won’t quiet down, the weight of past experiences that still show up in the present, or a sense that something just isn’t working in your life the way it could. Maybe you’ve tried to push through it on your own. Maybe you’ve even talked to someone before, but something still feels unresolved.

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve spent a long time being strong for others, pushing through pain, or feeling misunderstood. I believe therapy works best when it feels real, collaborative, and safe enough for honesty (even the messy parts). My style is warm, affirming, and direct. I balance compassion with gentle challenge, humor when appropriate, and a strong belief in your ability to grow. I don’t believe in shaming or “fixing” people, my goal is to help you better understand yourself, break unhelpful patterns, and build a life that feels more aligned and sustainable

I specialize in OCD and anxiety, substance use and psychedelics, and sex/kinky folx/ENM.
I practice from a nonjudgmental, harm reduction, and humanistic lens, which means our work will always center on your goals, your values, and what healing means for you. I draw on mindfulness, somatic practices, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). These techniques support deeper self-awareness, nervous system regulation, and long-term healing.

I have been a therapist for many years, ( ~ 38-man I sound old) and have studied many theories and learned many therapeutic techniques, some more valuable than others. However, what's most important is the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. A client must come to trust their therapist, feel accepted and have faith that their therapist knows what they are doing clinically. That being said, I have found Cognitive Behavioral techniques,, EMDR for trauma, Acceptance and Commitment therapy and others effective.

Have you tried traditional "talk therapy" in the past but are still stuck? If you're feeling hopeless, overwhelmed and anxious I encourage you to try a different approach. Together we will dive deeper to get to the root cause rather than immediately trying to fix the problem. It's always more complex than it appears on the surface and this work takes time and effort. I offer more expressive and experiential modalities to help you make meaningful, lasting changes and take you beyond just talk therapy. I take a holistic and integrative approach and see you as a whole person and not just a person with "issues."

A personal statement... so many things to say, lets make it short. If I were to use one word, it would be trust. A client needs to feel comfortable with their therapist and trust that their feelings and experiences will be validated. A client also needs to trust that their therapist knows what they are doing and has the education and experience to help. I have been in the field over 30 years and would like to think I have helped numerous clients with issues related to depression, anxiety, change of life transitions and addictions.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
