Are you experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression related to coping with difficult people/relationships? Oftentimes, these relationships can show up as inescapable: a parent, child, Supervisor, intimate/love, your ex, friendships, family members. The nature of these relationships can feel difficult due to an imbalance of power. Many people feel trapped inside of these relationship dynamics. Others in your life may (or may not) understand what you’re facing, and offer you well-intentioned but misinformed advice. Or perhaps you’ve decided to not disclose these concerns to anyone, which is common in intimate relationships!

People consult therapists for many reasons. Being a psychotherapist is a great privilege - to meet people at critical times, to come to know them deeply, and to help them sort out bewildering, sometimes frightening, often painful thoughts and feelings. Therapy is about relationships, past and present, and especially our relationship to our own interior. It's been my life's work to help people know themselves and make better decisions about their lives. I'm happy to see anyone, with the will, integrity, and courage to open up and work on themselves in depth.

Grief can be isolating. You might be scared to feel the gravity of a loss, afraid you will fall apart. The pain is unavoidable, however, the suffering can be reduced by learning healthy ways to cope and build meaning. In addition to grief work, I enjoy working with adults struggling with anxiety/OCD as well as postpartum concerns. Being a parent is both wonderful and brutal. You are trying to survive adjusting to a totally new way of life. It can be challenging, but you are not alone. I will help you strategize to most effectively utilize your support system and walk with you as you navigate this period.

My intention is for our time together to have value to you and for you to notice a difference in yourself not only over time, but immediately as well. I value mental health care that is more than symptom reduction. My emphasis is on human flourishing and helping you create a life with meaning. I use a mind and body-integrated approach to healing, such as increasing awareness of the Gut-Brain connection and incorporating Mindfulness practices along with traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you improve your mental wellness using all the ways your body naturally heals itself.

After working for over 30 years with individuals across all stages of the life span, I have come to believe that we are all wired for health in our relationships with self and others. In keeping with this premise, I employ a collaborative therapeutic style marked by warmth, empathy and respect. My therapeutic approach draws heavily from attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, emotion focused therapy, somatic work and mindfulness. This integration combines current psychological knowledge and techniques with ancient wisdom in order to support clients as they move more fully into health.

These struggles may have been recent, or they may reflect traumatic experiences or parts of our lives that have been problematic for many years. I work with adults of all ages--individuals and couples--to help them understand what has brought them to this point in their lives.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
