Gestalt Therapists in Baltimore, MD
My approach to therapy is holistic, feminist, and somatic. I am a particularly good fit for people who have tried talk therapy before and found that it "plateaued." My work helps to integrate mind and body, and this can access and shift patterns in a deep and enduring way. The clients I see tend to struggle with anxiety, depression, complex trauma, grief, identity, and relationship issues. I have also trained for 20 years in the performing arts, yoga, and meditation, and I work well with artists who are experiencing blocks and want a more embodied practice. I am allied with queer and BIPOC communities, and I welcome these clients.

We are all born with eyes, but learn how to see. Our self and worldview are shaped and molded by traumatic experiences, intimate relationships, and occurrences in the greater world around us. Our culture teaches us to conform for love and acceptance, to change our bodies and beliefs to fit the status quo, and to value working over living. Through the process of therapy, I will collaborate with you to uncover your wisest, most authentic Self and harness your strengths ultimately to learn how to navigate life’s ebbs and flows connected to your values, needs, and desires.

No one wakes up and says, bless me with a mental illness and negative thoughts. I know, having either or can make you feel isolated, embarrassed, and alone. Having a mental illness and/or negative thoughts are not uncommon, but can be scary if you are trying to deal with it by yourself.

I do therapy backwards. I help people first find acceptance of what's challenging them, and focus on making that feeling of discomfort feel safe. I believe that allowing the experience of the full range of human emotions is key to reclaiming and strengthening our emotional resiliency. We can accept the presence of discomfort and feel joy, while identifying and making changes based on who we want to be or know we are. My therapy practice is based in an understanding of the nervous system, mindfulness, and the ways we all experience and react to trauma and distress.

Today, people have gotten so use to keeping their thoughts bottled up or not properly displaying their feelings and emotions. As an experienced Clinician, it is my duty to provide a safe and supportive environment, where I can work collaboratively with my patients to address their individual needs. In addition, as a culturally, competent Clinician, it is my duty to teach clients how to understand and process their thoughts and feelings, how to learn to implement interventions and strategies to address difficult situations, and to positively respond to crisis conditions that may arise; however, the client must be ready & committed.

Do you find yourself wanting to experience life and relationships differently? Wanting to feel more valued, connected, alive? Do you tend to keep things in, to try to figure everything out on your own, because that's what you learned was safe, or reliable, or necessary? Having the courage to ask for help and to show up as our imperfect self; letting others see us in all our messy and raw vulnerability - this is how we come to experience real healing and connection. Sharing our story in a safe space makes it easier to own its painful parts and gain freedom through letting go - and to find more trust in ourselves and inner peace.

I provide a safe and confidential space to allow people to identify negative thought patterns (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), experiment around changing behaviors ( Gestalt Therapy, Motivational Interviewing), or to simply sit and share thoughts and decision-making processes with a judgment-free neutral third party (Person-Centered Therapy).
I specialize in grief counseling and have learned through direct experience that grief is experienced distinctly and differently by every individual. I support clients as they navigate their new reality, and will provide a warm space to process the powerful and often concerning emotions that can arrive so randomly and heavily after loss.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
