Collaboratively we identify strengths, needs, potential obstacles & strategies to reach their goals. Psychotherapy gives individuals opportunities to gain insight & understanding about one's thoughts, feelings, behaviors, how to manage one's emotions & awareness of others..."reading the entire room".

Do you find yourself keeping the peace with others by pushing down what you really want? Did you grow up in a home filled with tension or in a family that navigated divorce? You may have learned early on that smoothing things over was safer than speaking up. That strategy helped you then but left you disconnected from your own needs and wondering "do I even know what love or a healthy relationship even looks like?"

Psychotherapy is about listening. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and depth to help my clients hear their own voices of change and healing. How I understand psychotherapy to work is best expressed by Simone Weil: "Those who are unhappy have no need for anything in this world but people capable of giving them their attention. The capacity to give one's attention to a sufferer is a very rare and difficult thing; it is almost a miracle; it is a miracle." I surely cannot do miracles! But together with my clients I have watched miracles happen.

I see therapy not just as a form of a treatment but also as a gift we give to ourselves. Through therapy, we explore our thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and our relationship with others, including work and society. These explorations can be done alone but is more effective with a therapist, who can see patterns, themes, options, and solutions that we often overlook ourselves. Your relationship with me is a safe space to explore, to understand, to connect, and ultimately, to heal. Together, we will use evidence based therapeutic methods to develop healthy relationships with ourselves and with others.

It takes community and connection to promote healing. With choice comes power and self-empowerment. Especially for trans, gender nonconforming folx, anyone who identifies under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, and neurodivergent folx, the system doesn't feel made for us and choice feels limited. If you are looking for support exploring your issues in a compassionate and warm space, I truly believe even under systems of oppression, you can contact ways of thriving, finding and maintaining meaningful relationships with loved ones, and most importantly, with yourself. Let's talk, cook, write, dance, breathe/cry about it! It's all meaningful!

Sometimes life can feel complicated, overwhelming, and, at times, contradictory. Many people come to therapy not knowing exactly what they need, only that they don’t want to keep feeling the way they do. In a world that constantly demands more, it’s easy to lose touch with your needs. Slowing down and making time for yourself can feel foreign, but it's one of the bravest forms of self-love. You may not know what healing looks like yet, and that’s okay. I meet you where you are, and help you start from there. Together, we create space to pause, explore what you feel, and learn how to show yourself patience, grace, and understanding.

You are a unique constellation of values, needs, identities and experiences; to thrive you need all parts of yourself to be affirmed and nurtured. In the current climate it can be hard to take care of yourself and follow through on your goals. Maybe worry is keeping you up at night and doom scrolling all day. When you work with me you will have the opportunity to process all the thoughts and feelings that are moving through you, explore the beliefs that help and hinder you, set real intentions based on your values and practice concrete strategies for coping with threats while still finding connection and joy.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
