“When you stop silencing your body, you start hearing the truth. The aches, the cravings, the exhaustion — they’re not problems. They’re messages. Start listening.” ― Barbara O'Neill . My ideal client is prepared to engage in therapy and commit to the work, even when challenges arise. I seek clients who are dedicated to their healing journey and have a long-term vision of achieving independence and self-sufficiency rather than developing a co-dependent relationship with their therapist. I take a holistic approach to healing and work best with clients who are open to examining the environmental factors, behaviors, relationships, and experiences that shape their everyday lives and current state.

Are you struggling with life's challenges? Have you tried coping skills, and thirst for a deeper awareness and understanding of who you are, where you came from, and what makes you tick? If you have experienced some anxiety or depression, then please realize you are not alone, and sharing the burden within the therapeutic context can help make sense of your struggles, and release the weight you have been holding for so long.

We often go about our lives with a very limited scope, moving from one problem to the next. As a therapist, I try to help people look at the big picture. When we zoom out and look at things… like where we’ve been, where we think we’re going, the people we carry with us, how we’re affected by time and our bodies changing, the systems we’re a part of, the ways we’re deeply interconnected… it helps us understand our current experience of the world. It brings our attention to what’s pulling us away from the good in the here and now.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Maryland and Virginia and am authorized to practice in 40 states through PSYPACT. I enjoy working with a diverse group of individuals who have various levels of mental health challenges. My approach to psychotherapy comes from an understanding that every individual is unique and that various life experiences as well as genetic makeup contribute to one's overall mental health. I take into account the particular needs of the individual & focus on the current problem while also processing & exploring further in an attempt to identify & resolve the root of the issue.

Our newest team member, Lou D'Alesandro LGPC, is now accepting new clients with Aetna and Cigna! If you're reading this, ask yourself a question: Do I struggle with connecting to others? Do I know how to connect with myself? Do I find myself feeling misunderstood by others? Do I struggle communicating what I really think or really feel? There is a saying, "Memento Mori", which roughly translates to "Remember that you have to die". While this may seem morbid on the surface, it's actually a call to arms for the importance of living while we can! It speaks to the value of deep meaning in life, and truly living a life of substance.

Take a deep breath! Feel at peace knowing that together we will work towards a holistic approach along your journey. Oftentimes, as humans, we are surprised by life’s unexpected turns and are in need of a roadmap to show us the way. That roadmap can consist of dismantling generational traumas, spiritual awareness, empowering one’s self-identity, interrupting pathological patterns, or igniting intimate and family relationships. In addition to therapy, I also offer holistic coaching through Crown Therapy Coaching—designed for those seeking clarity, alignment, and personal liberation beyond the therapy room.

Do you find yourself wanting to experience life and relationships differently? Wanting to feel more understood, empowered, connected, alive? Shame and self-judgment about our past or our feelings or of just being stuck keep us quiet and alone. True strength is having the courage to show up as our authentic, imperfect self. And only when we let others see us in all our messy and raw vulnerability can we experience real healing and connection. When we share our story in a safe space, it becomes easier to accept and own its painful parts so we can gain freedom through letting go - and find more inner peace.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
