In my view, the client-therapist relationship should prioritize honesty and respect and while diagnosing is one aspect of psychotherapy, I am most interested in how your daily life is being impacted and what we can do in our work together to develop coping and awareness that will bring more harmony and help you lead a more fulfilled life.
I am a licensed clinical social worker with over two decades of experience working in integrated behavioral health. This provided me the opportunity to truly comprehend the value of working with clients from a holistic perspective that prioritizes health promotion in treating mind and body as one. I am also a professor at the University of Maryland.

The focus of my practice is relationships, for couples, individuals, and families.
I am a compassionate, empathic, and experienced therapist. I use a collaborative approach where you set the goals for therapy. Combining Emotion Focused Therapy, neurobiology, and mindfulness techniques we can isolate the negative repetitive patterns that have hijacked your relationship, and learn new ways of responding to each other.

I have extensive experience in working with couples, parents, and trauma survivors including active duty soldiers, veterans, and adults struggling with a devastating childhood.
At some point, everyone has experienced some sort of emotional distress whether it be the illness or death of a loved one, the pain of a divorce, a traumatic experience from childhood, or even the demands of everyday life. If you're wondering if you may need some help to get through something new or something from the past, you probably do. I want to help. I am extremely dedicated to helping my clients heal, improve their lives, and reach their own personal goals. If you're concerned that you might be "too much" for a psychotherapist, you're not. You deserve the chance to heal from your emotional distress.

Would you like to get out of your head and feel less shame when you showed up as an imperfect friend, parent, colleague, or partner but have no idea how to.
If we work together, I will tailor each session to the individual or couple in front of me, as everyone's goals and experiences are unique. I help clients slow down so they can learn their thoughts and behavior patterns. I help clients laugh even when we are navigating hard and distressing topics to help them relax and build flexibility in their thinking.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
