As a chronic illness therapist, I know how important it is to make your “new norm” more livable.
Whether you've been newly diagnosed or have been living with an illness for a while, you’ve been trying to push through to live the best you can. Every day is a battle because your body feels sick from aches, pains or other symptoms. You brace yourself for the worst to happen, because that’s unfortunately been your “new norm.” You miss being your old self - the one that could “do more things." Now, you feel like a failure in many areas of your life. The smile you wear covers what you really feel – alone, worried, helpless and angry. All of this has taken a toll on you emotionally and you want to feel more in control of your worries.

Age, body type, limited mobility, illness , or disability is not an impediment for engaging in yoga therapy: breathing and meditation.
I am the right therapist for you if you continue to suffer with depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, grief, unhappiness and a sense of disconnection from the deeper sense of who you are. I will teach you how to feel better about your life with the skills of yoga: breath and meditation; calming your upset or sick body and quieting your constantly negative thoughts. Psychological and medical research support that Yoga, while an ancient philosophy, teaches easy to learn skills that improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. I can guide you to your heart's desire for your life.

You are here because you are feeling unhappy, angry, worried, anxious, panicked, or full of self-doubt. Or you are a couple in need of direction and guidance to work through conflicts. I have found that fear is often the unrealized dynamic that gets in the way of fulfillment and happiness in many areas of life. Are you experiencing a recent transition, stressor or crisis that has brought about pain or confusion, or maybe you are struggling with a longstanding challenge? Therapy is a means to uncovering existing strengths, and to gaining insights and new skills to help overcome the fears that often accompany these challenges.

Whether you're dealing with insomnia, hopelessness, shame, chronic pain , substance abuse, dissociation, self-destructive behavior, etc.
I believe that your personal and ancestral pasts inform your present, but you also have the power to functionally rewrite and close the chapters that are rooted in powerlessness, guilt, fear, and shame, while freeing up the space and energy to curate the meaningful and meaning-filled future you deserve. As a queer, Chinese, eldest daughter of immigrants, I believe that it is important to hold space for all parts of you, no matter how much hate those parts have internalized, and no matter have much love those parts have been denied. An integrative, systemic, and humanistic framework guides my approach to healing.

I work with clients to address sex therapy + sexual health topics such as mismatched arousal/desire in couples, sexual identity/orientation exploration, Out Of Control Sexual Behaviors (OCSB), concerns related to sexual imagery/porn, navigating "kink" culture, + sexual pain /dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction (ED), anorgasmia + dyspareunia.
We are innately wired for connection, intimacy + pleasure. However, these intrinsic values can be altered by experiences of trauma, physiological factors, + the environment. Part of our work together will center around separating who you think you “should” be as a human from who you actually are as an intersectional being. I work with both individuals + couples to develop an understanding of attachments + sexuality in order to promote intimate relationships with both the self + others. We will explore how to cultivate meaningful connections that enable vulnerability, generate deeper intimacy, unearth desires, + harness pleasure.

I specialize in cognitive and behavioral approaches, training in substance use disorders, trauma, chronic pain , sleep disorders, and mindfulness.
I believe mental health care should be viewed just like physical health care, something we all need but in different ways at different times – sometimes an emergency needing acute care or maybe specific ailment, other times you just need a check-up and to check in.

I have a deep knowing and appreciation for working with grief and loss, end of life, chronic/ terminal illness and other significant life transitions.
We can't always control what life brings our way, but we can choose how we respond to it. I enjoy helping people reconnect with their natural wisdom in the midst of life's challenges. My goal is to help my clients gain awareness of what is already working in their lives and what patterns and habits have become outdated or self-defeating. A situation, problem or symptom that appears unworkable or overwhelming can offer the key to its own healing when held with gentle, inquisitive attention.

You will grow stronger and wiser by transforming pain into purpose.
It's not enough to survive, you want to thrive. You want to learn to heal beyond the present crisis, rediscovering your purpose, regenerating body and mind. You want to live a meaningful life connected to others. If you are ready to commit to a path of true healing and growth, then I want to walk that path with you. The driving force behind my vocation as a counselor is the conviction that suffering is the greatest catalyst for personal growth. I don't specialize in disorders, I specialize in people. I design innovative approaches tailored to the unique needs of a small number of highly committed clients.

It is important for me to be able to help bring an engagement of health and healing to the Baltimore metro community and encourage growth to help change the way that we interact with the pain and hurt that we have experienced as a whole.
I have experience and work with those that have undergone traumatic encounters. I believe that healing comes from addressing the traumas and confronting the difficulties that come from them, such as unhealthy boundaries and maladaptive coping. I utilize a mindfulness and strengths-based approach in addition to creating a stabilizing and safe environment to be able to process and deal with the emotions that result from the extremes of traumas that we experience. I tend to use action and coaching-oriented skills focusing on the behavioral aspects of management of stress and coping with the chronic impacts of trauma and relationships.

I do my best work with folks who are experiencing burnout and exhaustion related to their career, chronic illness , and/or being a caregiver for others in some capacity.
You're tired of being the strong one, the selfless one, the one who takes care of everything. You have trouble prioritizing yourself and listening to your own needs. You tell yourself "I should be able to handle this." or "I can't ask for help." The reality is, we aren't meant to go it alone when facing life's challenges. Therapy can be a safe place to build resilience, learn to listen to your own needs, and implement changes that lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life outside of the therapy room.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
