After working for over 30 years with individuals across all stages of the life span, I have come to believe that we are all wired for health in our relationships with self and others. In keeping with this premise, I employ a collaborative therapeutic style marked by warmth, empathy and respect. My therapeutic approach draws heavily from attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, emotion focused therapy, somatic work and
mindfulness
. This integration combines current psychological knowledge and techniques with ancient wisdom in order to support clients as they move more fully into health.

Accepting new clients. Welcome! Congratulations on taking the courageous first step of seeking out a therapist. It is an act of bravery and courage to explore what is impacting you or your child. A main focus of my approach is to create a safe and welcoming environment where each individual feels comfortable being themselves as we maneuver the therapeutic process together. Contacting a therapist can feel intimidating and overwhelming, but I hope you will take a minute (and maybe a few deep breaths) to email or call and see how I can help.

I draw from existential and humanistic theories and often incorporate
mindfulness
and meditation.
Do you find yourself wanting more out of life and relationships? Wanting to feel more understood, connected, alive? We're so often taught that it's not OK to be sad, angry, overwhelmed, or dissatisfied. Shame about these feelings keeps us quiet and alone. True strength is having the courage to show up as our authentic, imperfect self. And only when we let others see us can we experience real connection and live wholeheartedly. Whatever your story, it deserves to be heard. When we share our story in a safe space, it becomes easier to own its painful parts so we can gain freedom through letting go--and find healing, meaning, and joy.

I am a psychologist specializing in CBT for anxiety and depression. CBT is an evidence-based therapy that is proven to help people overcome thinking patterns that cause distress and prevent them from living the life they want. As a scientist-practitioner, I am committed to providing treatment that is proven to work, including CBT,
mindfulness
, ERP, and PE. However, science can only take us part of the way. Your expertise in your own lived experience is needed to get us to your therapeutic destination. For this reason, I will actively collaborate with you to tailor your therapy experience to your unique challenges, needs, and values.

I work from a relationship-based and insight-oriented approach, and use practices from IFS,
mindfulness
, and CBT.
Choosing to engage in therapy is a courageous choice (even when it doesn’t feel that way). In working with children, teens, and adults, I have appreciated and valued the concept of healing the whole person on all levels - body, mind, and spirit. I feel it also important to acknowledge systems that have impacted your life, am socially conscious in my work with clients— all identities, cultures, and types of relationships are welcome.

We will work at the intersection of the mind and body: using
mindfulness
to listen to your emotional body, using narrative therapy to edit the networks of meaning that organize your thinking.
It's not enough to survive, you want to thrive. You want to learn to heal beyond the present crisis, rediscovering your purpose, regenerating body and mind. You want to live a meaningful life connected to others. If you are ready to commit to a path of true healing and growth, then I want to walk that path with you. The driving force behind my vocation as a counselor is the conviction that suffering is the greatest catalyst for personal growth. I don't specialize in disorders, I specialize in people. I design innovative approaches tailored to the unique needs of a small number of highly committed clients.

You are brave, curious and brilliant but feel like you are an imposter and never good enough. You have tried people pleasing and a relentless pursuit of self-improvement strategies but can’t shake off the feeling of not being worthy. You long for true belonging, confidence and to live your most authentic expression by releasing old patterns that no longer serve you. You are not alone. I believe that we all have inherent within us expansive wisdom, and capacity to heal. We can't always access our truest Self because of past trauma, societal pressures and habitual patterns that keep us disengaged from our true nature.

I like to use
Mindfulness
-based approaches during therapy to build a sense of self-awareness and ability to ride out the storm in the midst of stress or strong emotions.
We often do not prioritize giving ourselves the time and space to explore what is going on within us and untangle our emotions. In a fast-paced world, it is important that we create the time to do so and reflect on what parts of the self we're neglecting that need compassionate care. My goal is to create that safe space while helping you tend to your heart, mind, and body on your journey towards healing. I aim to help clients find and build on their inner strengths, while learning to manage intense emotions, grow self-esteem and stronger boundaries, heal wounds, and build healthier relationships with themselves and others.

Evidence-based practices include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and
mindfulness
based interventions.
I have maintained a general practice approach and enjoy working with a variety of difficulties including childhood disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, and personality disorders, I have experience working with individuals who have substance abuse problems. My experiences have allowed me to work with a wide range of people. An example of a few areas I have worked with include graduate students, LGBT individuals, and healthcare professionals including those who work in mental health. A recent addition and growing interest is working with individuals who have developed addictions to prescription medication and do not readily fit into the more general substance abuse population.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
