Please note: I am currently accepting new clients on a limited basis. I offer day time virtual sessions only. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 15 years experience in supporting people of all ages navigate both distressing and exciting life transitions. I believe that to achieve true wellness and find balance in life, it is necessary to attend to the body, mind, heart and spirit.
Trained in psychedelic-assisted therapy, I offer both preparation and integration sessions for those interested in support for processing psychedelic experiences. Grounded in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), I also work with adults to develop the insight and skills needed for emotional healing, desired change, and growth. DBT is helpful in replacing unwanted thoughts and behaviors with healthy and adaptive alternatives. CFT combines multiple therapeutic models for the purpose of over coming self-criticism and enhancing our ability to experience contentment.
Melissa Powell is a License Certified Social Worker-Clinical in the state of Maryland. She has worked over 16+years in the child welfare and mental health field. She is a native of Baltimore, MD, and a graduate of Annapolis High School.
I practice psychotherapy with great respect for the dignity and creativity of the human mind. Since no two people are alike, no two therapies are alike. While some in my practice are more solution oriented and some focus more on depth, all in my work focus on gaining insight into internal conflicts, feelings and behaviors that cause you distress. This psychodynamic approach, by resolving old issues opens up new choices and opportunities in a way that solid research shows lasts. Not all therapists are the same. I help my clients find practical solutions to the issues facing them, and together we find ways to change the patterns behind these issues. Whether depression, anxiety, or dealing with a difficult life event, the situations facing us can feel overwhelming. For over 15 years I've empowered children, families, and adults as they move toward their goals. I am experienced in school and community settings, as well as inpatient, and I enjoy working with people of all backgrounds and orientations.
Welcome to Serenity Helping Hands Therapy Center, LLC. We live in a world of constant change and increasing challenges. Sometimes the changes and challenges of life can become too overwhelming. Many times the answer to the various issues we face lies within us and we just need a safe place to express our thoughts, issues, and feelings without judgment. Whatever brings you here, our agency believes in using a holistic approach in treating a wide variety of therapeutic challenges.
Are you a caretaker experiencing depression, stress or resentment towards your loved one? Have you been actively using substances or had a recent slip in use after years of being in recovery? Do you find yourself engaging in emotional eating or caloric restriction? Are you in need of emotional support after terminating a pregnancy? Has something occurred that caused you to start anew? Do you need a supportive ear that will listen and allow you to express your thoughts and feelings? Are you seeking skills to help you cope with everyday issues? Asking for help can be scary, but trying to go it alone can be even scarier.
I have been in the field of social work since 2007, and my approach focuses on healing obstacles to attaining peace and satisfaction in your life. My style of practice is relational, and my aim is to offer expert support as you navigate challenges at your own pace. I specialize in working with individuals and couples who feel disconnected, specifically those who have experienced trauma and contend with its impact on their sense of wellbeing. I often have success working with people who have had unsatisfying therapy experiences, and my clients include therapists, abuse survivors, teachers, and first responders.
I believe in the power of therapy to awaken your innate capacity for healing and transformation. With this aim, I will guide you in navigating difficult life transitions and current and past relationship challenges; in mending past trauma(s), and in coming to know your core self. With gentle and empathic presence, I support you in developing tools to cope with your symptoms, and over time, to explore and repair their roots. I practice from a body-centered and relational approach, attuning to and facilitating interconnections between mind, body, and emotion in my patients.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS! Let's get to the real stuff!! Are you having a difficult time managing the "stuff" in your life? Whether it be depression, anxiety, substances, relationships, etc. We are living in a very fast pace world where our stuff can become overwhelming and may need some assistance. My belief to counseling is to assist the client where they are and aid in identifying solutions. Through therapy, I provide my clients with the tools that they need to live their life to the fullest and to discover the potential they have within themselves.
Every stage in life, every situation we face, brings with it challenges, hardships and opportunities. The psychotherapeutic process brings focus and awareness to where we are now in our lives, where we've been, and the person we want to be. I see the therapeutic process as a journey that we take together. Whether you are an adult, adolescent, or family, my goal is to create a safe, caring, non-judgmental environment where you can explore relationship dynamics, patterns of behavior, identity, and opportunities for growth and change.
Do you miss the easy way you both would listen and understand each other? Would you like your communication to solve problems instead of start conflicts? When you reach out with a need is it answered? The focus of my practice is relationships, for couples, individuals, and families. Finding ourselves in recurring conflicts and stalemates at home can create a hopeless place, accompanied by feelings of anger, confusion, and loneliness. Through therapy, we can learn to communicate clearly, state our needs, and rebuild trust. Let's work together to unravel the stuck place you're in and rewrite the script for greater joy and connection.
What might be possible for you? You can change outmoded, self-defeating behaviors that feel impossible to get out of. Involuntary, unconscious brain-body evaluations that keep you stuck in unwanted habits of thought and/or ruts of complacency, can be changed to serve your present life better. Our talk therapy and body focus is at the core level of change.
Our work will focus on reclaiming your personal power, living as an expression of your values, and growing your capacity to create change in your life. Expect a process-oriented approach emphasizing your engagement and commitment; a holistic worldview that reflects the interdependency of ourselves in both the broader world and in the constituent parts of our lives which can invite distress when compartmentalized and fractured; and a gently challenging style that will hold you to your ideals, your utmost honesty, and your personal vision of a life well-lived.
Therapy with me will provide a safe, warm, nonjudgmental, identity-affirming space where you will feel fully heard and understood. Within a feminist, anti-oppressive, trauma-centered framework we will explore how past and present experiences have shaped the distress, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness you may be carrying. We will explore how you cope with this and why some coping strategies may be further contributing to the stress/distress carried in your brain and body. Together we will work towards healing, growth and developing a greater understanding and compassion for yourself and your journey.
We all suffer, and we all have to cope with it. I can help relieve people of suffering caused by maladaptive patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving that they have been conditioned to repeat over time. I do this by building a relationship with them, then allowing that relationship to be the template for healthy interactions in life and a realistic perception of themselves and their situation.
Hello & welcome to the first day of the new journey of your life. I am happy that you have taken the time to invest in yourself. Life can be full of many obstacles, challenges and decisions.Sometimes it is difficult to navigate past previous trauma or we just need time to sit back, breathe, think, evaluate and determine what your next step should be. Therapy is a helpful tool that can assist you with finding cooping skills, anger management skills and to heal from past traumas, abuse and neglect. My role is to help guide & navigate you through what has brought you to therapy & provide some skills to make life become more manageable
You're working to break intergenerational patterns, and show up fully as yourself– that is hard work, especially when there’s no pause button on the rest of life. I help millennials and gen x-ers process the impacts of trauma, including dissociation, in order to navigate relationships in the present with more ease. Together we’ll create more space for you to be your authentic self with yourself and others. When you work with me, we’ll talk about systems of power and oppression and how they’re impacting what you’re feeling and experiencing.
