It's painful to be depressed and anxious. You've tried everything and can't seem to shake it. That's when you know it's time to get professional help.

My approach is to use traditional talk therapy methods with mindfulness -based skills to help strengthen the capacities that already exist within you to be more intentional in your everyday choices so that you can create a life congruent with you needs and values.
In today’s world, feeling chronically stressed, anxious, worried, and afraid of catastrophe seem to be a normal way of life for many of us; it may seem as if we have no choice or power to be any other way. But my years of training and experience tells me this is not the case. There is a way to create a sense of inner calm; to increase focus, attention, and concentration; to reduce stress; better regulate strong emotions; to cultivate greater self-compassion toward yourself and others; and to decrease or even eliminate unhealthy levels of anxiety and depression.

I have many areas of professional interest that I have received training and education including mindfulness , positive psychology, women's health, holistic health and I have completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training.
I can see your strength, even when you cannot. I use my education and experience in psychology to lead you to discover your most authentic self. I believe that we all develop patterns of behaviors due to our life circumstances that can be both positive and negative. By examining these patterns in behavior and thought and how they serve us, one can make changes to improve life. I am an action-oriented therapist who believes therapy should not end as soon as you leave the office. I will often give techniques to practice or topics for further reflection.

I have experience working in a variety of specialized areas, including mindfulness , DBT, depression and anxiety, women's issues, trauma, substance abuse and addiction, workplace stress, divorce and perinatal mood disorders.
Usually, when we're facing challenges that feel overwhelming, we crave understanding and acceptance...someone who will listen, provide support and stand side by side with us as we navigate our way through murky waters. We also long for relief from whatever is causing us pain - from harmful behaviors or confusing situations to emotions or thoughts that feel out of control. We want to feel better and to be free - free to take pleasure in the joys and triumphs of our lives and free to live our lives with the confidence that we have the tools and resources to cope with whatever pain may appear.

When possible, I like to incorporate activities that encourage new perspectives to emerge, such as Narrative, Art and mindfulness .
As we navigate daily life sometimes we come across rough waters that overwhelm us, leaving us feeling adrift, without direction or purpose, even stranded and alone. Finding the "right" direction can be petrifying! In both my professional and private life, I've learned that getting support is integral to finding our way again. I am passionate about helping adults and couples learn new skills, uncover new perspectives, connect with a source of strength, and choose a more authentic path. Idea clients include caregiver burnout, young adult transition, parenting and Adult ADHD.

Over the course of my career I have become increasingly aware of a demand in the community for Sex Therapy, and have decided to recalibrate my practice accordingly. I am engaged in a comprehensive training program facilitated by the Sexual Health Alliance on my path to becoming an AASECT-certified Sex Therapist. My background in substance abuse and trauma has largely informed this decision. I continue to serve individuals seeking to manage compulsive behaviors, AD(H)D, anxiety disorders, and mood symptoms through this transition to a sex-centered practice.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
